De Canadese film Passchendaele, waarvan de opnamens logischerwijs gedeeltelijk in België plaatsvonden, was geen hapklare brok voor de liefhebbers van oorlogsfilms. Integendeel, eerder een teleurstelling aangezien de romantiek in de film nogal overheerste, de acteerprestaties van Paul Cross (die tevens als regisseur fungeerde) te wensen overlieten en de Slag om Passchendaele niet altijd even geloofwaardig in beeld werd gebracht.
Voor de muziek werd de Poolse componist Jan A.P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful, e.a.) ingeschakeld. Kaczmarek leverde een erg rustige, emotionele score af die op zich perfect aansluit bij de talrijke romantische scčnes die de film telt. Ook weer in deze muziek van Kaczmarek staat de combinatie van frivole strijkers en piano in het middelpunt.
In tegenstelling tot zijn bekendere werken telt Passchendaele slechts tien tracks waarvan twee een tamelijk lange speelduur hebben, iets wat we eigenlijk van de componist minder gewend zijn.
Op zich geen minpunt, want beide tracks ('Separation' en 'No Solution') behoren tot het beste van de score.
De sfeer die we te horen krijgen op de knappe openingstrack, vormt meteen de basis voor de daaropvolgende tracks. Naast enkele emotionele thema's omvat deze filmmuziek eveneens een ietwat repetitief thema dat voor het eerst te horen is in de korte track 'The Attack' en later ook nog eens vluchtig terugkomt in 'Frontline Moves 100 Yards' en 'The War'.
De liefhebbers van Kaczmarek's muziek voor Finding Neverland komen heel even aan hun trekken met tracks als 'Little Town' en 'The Cross', respectievelijk de vrolijkste track en mooiste track die deze score te bieden heeft.

Set during the height of the First World War, Passchendaele tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a Canadian soldier who is brutally wounded in France and returns home emotionally and physically scarred. While in the military hospital in Calgary, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a mysterious and attractive nurse for whom he develops a passionate love. When Sarah's younger, asthmatic brother, David (Joe Dinicol), signs up to fight in Europe, Michael feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him. Michael and David, like thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle of Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as 'Passchendaele.' It is a story of passion, courage and dedication, showing the heroism of those that fought in battle, and of the ones that loved them.
