Netflix’s Baby Reindeer flaunts haunting score by Evgueni & Sacha Galperine

Composer duo Evgueni and Sacha Galperine create minimalist yet mesmerising score for Richard Gadd’s autobiographical comedy-drama 'Baby Reindeer'

The series is now worldwide available on Netflix

Baby Reindeer is a dark but painfully funny story about an aspiring comedian dealing with a stalker, starring Richard Gadd, who adapted his award-winning autobiographical one-man play into a seven-episode limited series with the help from the makers of The End of the F***king World.

Baby Reindeer

“It’s complicated” does not begin to describe the relationship between comedian/bartender Donny (Richard Gadd) and fan/stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning), yet the paper trail is remarkably one-sided. Creator, showrunner and lead actor Richard Gadd tells the true story of his stalker and the 40,000 emails, 740 tweets, 350 hours of voicemail, 100 pages of letters and 45 Facebook messages she bombarded him with. The harassment lasted for years, yet Gadd insists he is not solely a victim in the whole situation. After all, to be adored is a powerful drug and Martha’s “baby reindeer” - her nickname for him - does not seem to be as doe-eyed or feeble-footed as she imagines.

Lured by the Siren’s song

As the series is based on actual events in showrunner and actor Richard Gadd’s life, composers Evgueni and Sacha Galperine were tasked with the complex assignment of essentially scoring memories. They had a unique and close collaboration with Gadd, who was not only sensitive to how the music woud fit the scenes, but was also mindful of the feelings he had while he experienced these events. The result is a score that is truthful to both: sinister staccato strings are playfully infused with a mysterious lightness in line with the tone of the series and the drama-comedy that is life.

As Baby Reindeer refuses to be labeled with just one genre, the score by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine is equally layered. All tracks on the soundtrack rely on a minimalist approach, yet boast sophistically constructed melodic themes. And just like in the series, what appears to be one thing in the soundtrack, might turn out to be something totally different. The first track, named “Martha Suite”, the composers have described as “a Siren Song”. We seem to hear a female voice, which in fact is a whistle with vibrato effect: Martha the Siren trying to seduce Donny. Nevertheless, throughout the series, we discover that 'The Siren' also represents a voice from Donny's past trying to draw him back in. It's also the allure of fame and fortune which drives him, but leaves him vulnerable.
