Het verhaal begint in het verleden, waarbij Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) moet toezien dat ze zijn geliefde Frances Barrison (Naomie Harris) wegvoeren. In het heden blijkt Kasady een moordenaar te zijn geworden, die gevangen zit en alleen nog wenst te spreken met Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy). Eddie is de gastheer van het monster Venom, die in zijn lijf woont en waardoor hij superkrachten heeft. Deze Venom komt erachter waar Kasady z'n slachtoffers verbergt. Ze gaan op bezoek bij Kasady, waar een ruzie ontstaat en Kasady een stukje van Brock's hand afbijt, waarin ook Venom-sporen zitten. Daaruit groeit een kwaadaardige Venom, die zich Carnage noemt en Kasady als gastheer heeft. Carnage weet de executie van Kasady te voorkomen, en zo ontsnappen ze. Carnage en Kasasy besluiten tot een deal om Barrison te bevrijden en Brock/Venom te doden...
De muziek bij deze grootscheepse productie is van Marco Beltrami, die wel weg weet met dergelijke verhalen. De score voor de vorige film 'Venom' uit 2018 was van Ludwig Göransson, die niet bij iedereen in de smaak viel. Vandaar dat ze voor het vervolg naar een meer gerenommeerde componist gezocht hebben en uitkwamen bij Beltrami, die voor deze grootschalige productie een even grootschalige score uit de hoge hoed toverde.
Hij heeft hiervoor een combinatie van orkestrale en elektronische muziek ingezet en vrijwel de hele score hoor je beide elementen meestal gezamenlijk voorbij komen. Af en toe komen alleen akoestische instrumenten voor het voetlicht, en ook wordt de elektronische muziek soms ingezet zonder akoestische ondersteuning, maar bijna altijd horen we ze tegelijk, of via ruige elektrische gitaren in een soort van instrumentcombi.
Beltrami heeft een flink aantal thema's voor de film geschreven. Natuurlijk is er een thema voor Venom zelf, maar ook voor zijn huisbaas Brock, voor Kasady en voor Carnage, en zelfs is er een soort van love theme te onderscheiden, die we in de openingstrack te horen krijgen. Die openingstrack is nog redelijk rustig, alhoewel... De liefdesmelodie van Kasady en Barrison is bewust wat vals gecomponeerd. De muziek zit vaak naast de harmonieën en ook de piano wordt ondersteund door soms valse noten. Daar bovenop heeft Beltrami dan ook nog scherpe strijkers gezet, die de muziek een wat ijzig kleurtje geven.
Het thema voor Cletus Kasady horen we in de tweede track, met een steeds terugkerend viertonig motief als basis. Zijn thema geeft de muziek een onheilspellende notie en Beltrami vult dit dan ook vaak in met donkere klanken van strijkers en elektronica. Het thema komt regelmatig terug in diverse tracks.
Het meest prominent is het thema voor Venom, dat we voor het eerst in 'Lucky Slaughterhouse' te horen krijgen, al zit het daar een beetje verstopt in een hoop actie-bombast. 'Ann's News' is een veel rustiger track, hoewel wat springerig, maar hierin is het thema beter te onderscheiden. Een van de tracks waarin Venoms thema het best naar voren komt is 'He did not Taste Good', waarin Beltrami dit thema in een soort van heroïsche setting op koperblazers heeft gearrangeerd, met fraai pulserende strijkers daaronder. Daarmee is dit gelijk ook een van de fraaiste tracks van de score. Ook in het eerste gedeelte van de voorlaatste track komt dit thema op een stevige manier naar voren, waarna degradeert naar een soort metal-hardrock stijl.
De muziek van Beltrami voor deze score zit vaak behoorlijk in de actiemodus en is regelmatig stevig bombastisch, met grommende strijkers en zware percussie, donkere blazers en grommende elektronische klanken, om de grimmigheid van de filmbeelden te benadrukken. Af en toe zweept Beltrami de muziek op tot chaotische proporties, die nogal lastig in het gehoor liggen. De spanning in de muziek wordt regelmatig flink opgevoerd en Beltrami is hier uiteraard een meester in. Vaak genoeg geeft hij de muziek een bijna horrorachtige stijl, maar ook zit de muziek nogal eens in het hardrock genre, met raggende gitaren en heftige percussie. Het is zeker niet allemaal even fraai om los van de film naar te luisteren.
Tegelijk bevat de score ook zonder meer erg fraaie elementen of zelfs hele tracks die prima in het gehoor liggen. Soms is de muziek bijna ingetogen en verhalend. En ook weet Beltrami zijn muziek soms tot bijzonder aansprekende arrangementen te verwerken.
Kortom, met zijn muziek voor de Marvel actieheldenfilm Venom: Let There Be Carnage heeft Marco Beltrami een score afgeleverd die allicht prima bij zo'n type film past. Met gevarieerde muziek, die meestal nogal aan de stevige en bombastische kant zit, is er echter een overwegend dreigende en spannende kleuring aanwezig, terwijl de actiemuziek nooit ver weg is en soms zelfs ontaard in chaotische klanken. De orkestrale en elektronische mix pakt soms echter erg fraai uit, maar dat zijn toch wel uitzonderingen, die met name naar het einde van het album te horen zijn. De afsluitende track is zelfs wat saai. Deze score van Beltrami krijgt daarmee, los van de film, een waardering van 68 uit 100 punten.

Of the soundtrack, composer Marco Beltrami says, “Because of COVID restrictions, we had to change the way we worked on processing acoustical sounds. Where we’d normally work with live musicians to create source material, here we had musicians record at home and then re-amp them at Sony. In addition, we worked with feedback looping to create some of the aggressive tones for Carnage.
The film presented a lot of fun musical challenges, from a unique enhanced brass theme for Venom, to the altered woodwind theme for Carnage and Shriek, to a slightly bluesy feel for Eddie.
Overall, in spite of those COVID restrictions, I feel very lucky we were able to still record many of the orchestral sessions at Sony and have it come out sounding so good!”

Marco Beltrami is a two-time Oscar®-nominated composer. Sony Classical will release Marco Beltrami's score to Venom: Let There Be Carnage on October 1st 2021. Sony will release a CD and a digital album. Venom: Let There Be Carnage directed by Andy Serkis and starring Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Stephen Graham & Reid Scott will be released in theaters nationwide on October 1 by Sony Pictures. Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, A Quiet Place, Logan, Scream, The Wolverine, Ford v Ferrari, The Hurt Locker, Hellboy) has written the score to this sequel for which Ludwig Göransson wrote the score for the first movie. Today Sony Classical already released 2 tracks from the soundtrack. Carnage Unleashed is a typical horror track in which Beltrami is a master. Venom and Blues is a catchy track which really sticks to you. The total playtime of the album is 67 minutes.
