Original soundtrack from mammoth two-part mini-series about true-life Thracian slave-turned-gladiator whom challenges might of Roman Empire, with Goran Visnjic in title role. Randy Miller scores for large orchestra plus ethnic ensemble featuring oud, duduk, female voice, unusual percussion. With nod to epic scores of long ago, Miller actually creates themes and motifs, gives structure to his music. Main idea for Spartacus is five-note melody that plays dramatically in brass or strings, always within single octave. Flexible idea functions both as short, independent motif or as initial phrase of longer line. Miller also fashions haunting love theme for Spartacus and Varinia plus arching melody representing gladiator army's struggle for freedom. Other important musical ideas play for influential gladiator Draba, Roman General Crassus, slave Crixxus. Action takes center stage with dynamic 'Revolt', charged 'Maximus Battle' sequences. Moving highlight: 'Crassus Battle'. Slave army's quest for freedom becomes hopeless when Crassus attacks with superior Roman legions. Here composer offers moving piece that plays to heartfelt emotion of scene rather than mirroring individual fight action. Randy Miller's overall score reveals impressive architecture via substantial development of ideas, lengthy cues. Special CD presentation comes through combined efforts of composer, NBC-Universal, USA Network and Intrada. Randy Miller conducts Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Intrada Signature Edition release limited to 1000 copies.
