Inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s texting-suicide case,“The Girl From Plainville” stars Elle Fanning, Chloë Sevigny, and Colton Ryan. All eight episodes of the limited series is now streaming on Hulu.
From co-showrunners Patrick Macmanus and Liz Hannah, “The Girl From Plainville” is inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s unprecedented “texting-suicide” case. Based on the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the limited series explores Carter’s relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to his death and, later, her conviction of involuntary manslaughter.
Says Ross: “Our way into the story was Michelle Carter’s obsession with “Glee,” we took that and ran with it as our primary influence. But beyond that we became interested in the dual lives these kids were leading. The intense wells of emotion being typed into their phones were at odds with their somewhat mundane everyday lives. We wanted to reflect that duality by subverting gentle instrumentation such as breathy vocals and clarinets, giving the music a placid exterior that thinly veils complex layers of textural unease.”
