Milan Records today announces the release of Shining Girls (Apple TV+) with music by composer Claudia Sarne. Available in full Friday, May 27, 2022 the album features music written by Sarne for Apple TV+’s new Original Series, a dark, gripping drama starring and executive produced by Elisabeth Moss. Making its debut today is the series’ opening credits theme “Playground,” an ethereally haunting track punctuated by ominous sound bowl samples and sprawling synths.
Appearing throughout the series as a recurring theme, “Playground” introduces Sarne’s expansive soundscape, which slowly unfolds alongside the mind-bending mystery. The fourth episode of Shining Girls premieres globally on Apple TV+ today, with new episodes debuting weekly.

Of the score, composer Claudia Sarne says, “For the music of Shining Girls, we were aiming to create a sonic world that was both hypnotic and inviting, but that could also become unsettling and disturbing in a heartbeat. We started by recording sound bowls in nontraditional ways to form the basis of much of the sound beds in the show, and then put a number of felt-treated keyboards, muted bells, modular synths and looped percussion samples through different treatments to find a more unique sound.
Some of the cues were written to reflect the cyclical nature of the show – the idea of a certain theme playing back on itself, changing and degrading as it repeats. I loved working with [executive producer] Silka Luisa, who encouraged me to keep the music muscular without sacrificing the more delicate aspects of the show’s musical palette.”

About Shining Girls

Shining Girls is a new metaphysical thriller from Apple TV+ starring and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning actress Elisabeth Moss. Based on Lauren Beukes’ bestselling novel, Shining Girls follows Kirby Mazrachi (Moss), a Chicago newspaper archivist whose journalistic ambitions were put on hold after enduring a traumatic assault. When Kirby learns that a recent murder mirrors her own case, she partners with seasoned, yet troubled reporter Dan Velazquez (played by Wagner Moura), to uncover her attacker’s identity. As they realize these cold cases are inextricably linked, their own personal traumas and Kirby’s blurred reality allow her assailant to remain one step ahead. In addition to Moss and Moura, the gripping drama series stars Phillipa Soo, Amy Brenneman and Jamie Bell.

Hailing from MRC Television, Shining Girls is adapted for television and executive produced by Silka Luisa, who also serves as showrunner. Moss stars, directs and executive produces through Love and Squalor Pictures, alongside Lindsey McManus. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson and Michael Hampton executive produce through Appian Way. Emmy Award winner Michelle MacLaren directs and executive produces with Rebecca Hobbs for MacLaren Entertainment. Daina Reid directs and executive produces. Lauren Beukes and Alan Page Arriaga also serve as executive producers.
