Lakeshore Records has released The Ipcress File—Original Series Soundtrack featuring music by Ivor Novello-nominated composer Tom Hodge (Rise of the Nazis, The Mauritanian), available now digitally. Hodge’s vibrant score utilizes instrumentation true to the 1960’s creating an authentic backdrop to the critically acclaimed six-episode series based on the spy thriller.
The Ipcress File is produced by Altitude Television and is currently airing on ITV in the UK and all of the episodes are available on the ITV Hub. The series is set for broadcast across the world in the coming months.
Globally renowned Len Deighton novel The Ipcress File, the first in the Harry Palmer series, has been adapted by Oscar® nominated and BAFTA award winning writer John Hodge into a six-part television series, directed by Emmy® award-winner James Watkins and produced by Altitude Television for ITV.
This new high-octane thriller stars Joe Cole (Gangs of London, Peaky Blinders), as the iconic spy Harry Palmer, alongside Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Murder on the Orient Express), BAFTA award winning actor Tom Hollander (The Night Manager, Bird Box) and Ashley Thomas (Them, Top Boy, Salvation).
The Ipcress File is a cinematic rollercoaster of twists and turns set in the 1960s amid the highly charged atmosphere of the Cold War as it rages between the West and East.
Altitude Television have produced the series in association with ITV Studios who will broadcast the series in the UK. AMC+ will broadcast the series in the US and Canada.
Says Hodge: “”I knew immediately I wanted a little of the jazz (or at least slightly polytonal) idiom- it is not something I’ve had a chance to really explore before in film and TV, but I consider it a core part of my musical voice, so I was very excited to work in this space.
And I was really keen also to come largely from an acoustic angle and I was keen to explore something more traditional in that respect. Off the back of this, I made the conscious choice to only use sounds that were actually available in the 60s. This broadly ruled out synthesizers! (except for the very first Moog and Buchla.) And furthermore, we carried this principle through the production and the mix also.”
Tom Hodge
Ivor Novello-nominated Tom Hodge is one of the leading composers in the UK, on the cutting edge of contemporary sound for drama and beyond, including his score for Kevin Macdonald’s critically-acclaimed drama, ‘The Mauritanian’, starring Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch.
In 2019 his score for the BBC/PBS historical docu-miniseries, ‘Rise of the Nazis’ earned him an Ivor Novello Nomination, and he has recently completed work on a second series of the show for makers 72 films, as well as the recent ‘Royal Bastards: Rise of the Tudors’ for the same team. Other credits include his score for the prestige BBC/AMC eight-part crime drama series, McMafia.
Alongside frequent collaborator Floex, Tom scored Christian Schwochow’s feature, ‘Je Suis Karl’, which premiered at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival and is now streaming on Netflix. He has just completed the score for a new six-part adaptation of ‘The Ipcress File’ for Altitude Television, starring Joe Cole, Tom Hollander and Lucy Boynton, airing in March 2022 on ITV in the UK and through AMC in the US.
A pianist, clarinetist and recording artist pushing the boundaries of experimental neoclassical, Tom continues to shape the aural landscape of original scores across feature film, documentaries, TV drama, ballet and multiple award-winning advertising campaigns.
“The John Barry comparisons are inevitable, especially given its general 60s vibe, but I assure you: Tom makes The Ipcress File completely his own.” – The Film Scorer
