De Amerikaanse tv-serie Severance is een science-fiction thriller serie, die op het betaalkanaal Apple TV+ sinds begin 2022 kan worden gestreamd. De psychologisch getinte serie bestaat uit negen afleveringen, waarvan zes geregisseerd zijn door Ben Stiller, die ook als executive producent meewerkte, en drie door Aoife McArdle. De serie is uitstekend ontvangen en kreeg hoge waarderingen van de critici, en kreeg vele nominaties voor prijzen, waarvan er een flink aantal gewonnen zijn.
Het verhaal draait om het bedrijf Lumon Corporation. Dit technologiebedrijf vraagt van haar werknemers om een zogenaamde 'severance' (ofwel 'doorsnijding') te laten uitvoeren van hun brein, door een chip te laten plaatsen. Zo moet hun bewustzijn binnen het bedrijf gescheiden blijven van hun bewustzijn buiten het werk, in hun privédomein. De werknemers mogen zelfs geen contact maken tussen hun binnen- en buitenbrein. Zo wil Lumon bereiken dat geheim blijft waar ze op hun werk mee bezig zijn. Mark Scout (Adam Scott) is net gepromoveerd tot afdelingshoofd, en langzamerhand komt hij erachter dat de 'severance' eveneens een geheim moet blijven, om voor een hoger doel te dienen...
De muziek bij deze tv-serie is van Theodore Shapiro, die door regisseur Stiller werd gevraagd om de score te verzorgen. Stiller en Shapiro hadden daarvoor al vele malen samengewerkt. Voor zijn muziek werd Shapiro genomineerd voor een aantal prijzen, waarvan hij een Primetime Emmy won.
Aanvankelijk was het idee om met twee verschillende muzikale stijlen te gaan werken, een voor de wereld van het bedrijf - de werknemers worden 'innies' genoemd - en een voor de buitenwereld, waar ze 'outies' heten. Toch zijn Shapiro en Stiller daarvan afgeweken, omdat ze de sound meer algemeen bij het mysterie van het verhaal wilden laten blijven.
Shapiro heeft voor de serie een tamelijk elektronische score gecomponeerd. Toch is het vooral de piano die de muziek domineert. Maar de klanken van die piano zijn niet warm, en dat geldt ook voor de muziek als geheel. Het komt allemaal vrij koud, soms zelfs wat ijzig en licht vervreemdend over, alsof het niet over mensen, maar over machines gaat. En in zekere zin is dat ook zo. Soms brengt Shapiro de pianoklanken met steeds een dissonante toon ertussen.
Het album opent met die pianoklanken in de 'Main Titles', die daar nog redelijk aangenaam klinken, al is het een themamotief die al iets van dat vervreemdende laat horen. Aan het eind van de track horen we nog wat geluiden die doen denken aan slecht afgestemde radioklanken, maar die zijn daar uiteraard bewust zo geplaatst, om dat vervreemdende effect te versterken.
Vervolgens horen we de track 'Labor of Love', waarin de muziek tamelijk gewoon klinkt, terwijl 'Kimono Hallway' met z'n tamelijk minimalistische kleuring opnieuw weer koud en afstandelijk klinkt, ondanks de beperkte pianoklanken. Ook stemklanken, de koude galm en weer de verkeerde radioafstemming helpen mee aan die afstandelijkheid. Dit is een thematische kleuring die in de hele score de basis vormt. Daarmee heeft vrijwel alle muziek op dit album die nogal kille, koude kleuring over zich, een kleuring die allicht perfect bij de tv-serie past.
De vele elektronische klanken en geluiden werken daar sterk aan mee, want Shapiro past veel grimmige klanken toe in zijn muziek. Soms zijn die klanken traag en incidenteel, maar ook regelmatig worden die klanken een up-tempo ritme gebracht, waarbij een snelle percussie voor extra spanning zorgt. Soms krijg je via de muziek de indruk dat je naar een score voor een horrorfilm zit te luisteren, zo vervreemdend en creepy klinkt het dan allemaal, zoals in 'Tokens' en delen van andere tracks.
Maar de muziek is niet alleen vervreemdend, ook vaak spannend. Dat lost Shapiro dan redelijk conventioneel op met wat meer bombastische klanken van veel lage tonen en wat meer melodie daar overheen. Het album sluit af met 'Alive', die ook al een wat meer spannende kleuring heeft, maar dan juist gevoed door een licht melodieuze underscore van klanken en effecten.
Kortom, met zijn muziek voor de tv-serie Severance heeft Theodore Shapiro een uitstekende score gecomponeerd, die ook in diverse recensies van de serie speciaal genoemd wordt. Maar om los van de tv-serie naar te luisteren is interessant, maar niet voor veelvuldige luistersessies. Daarvoor is de muziek te afstandelijk, te kil, te koud. Het regelmatig terugkerende pianomotief draagt juist bij aan die vervreemding, en dat geldt ook voor de overwegend elektronische begeleiding. De vele klanken en geluiden, die soms ondersteund worden met stevige percussie zorgen soms zelfs voor een creepy kleuring. De algehele waardering als luisterscore komt dan ook op 62 uit 100 punten.

Theodore Shapiro's versatility as a storyteller spans across genres from slapstick screwball comedies like Dodgeball all the way to nuanced character dramas like The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Recently he re-teamed with director Ben Stiller for the acclaimed Severance on Apple TV+. The series is a wonderfully executed thriller that blends science fiction in a grounded modern reality with plenty of social commentary on top of well-developed characters and storytelling.
Theodore shares a bit about his path to becoming a composer including taking us into his general approach. We discuss the great traits he loves in his regular collaborators like Paul Feig and Ben Stiller, and why he loves working with them.
Theodore tells the story of how he first met Ben Stiller, which led him to scoring Dodgeball and eventually working with Ben when he was in the director's chair on Tropic Thunder. We look back at projects like Tropic Thunder, Zoolander 2, and do a bit of a dive into Severance.

Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.
The series is written and created by Dan Erickson. Mark Friedman, Chris Black, John Cameron and Andrew Colville are executive producers alongside Erickson. Ben Stiller, Nicky Weinstock and Jackie Cohn executive produce through Red Hour Productions, and both Patricia Arquette and Adam Scott serve as producers. Endeavor Content serves as the studio.
Says Shapiro: “Although ‘Severance’ can be classified as science-fiction, at its heart it’s a mystery. The music of the score, built around four repeating chords, is a gigantic question mark. As the mystery unfolds, so do variations on our theme.”
