Sinister - 08/10 - Review of Chris R., submitted at
Christopher Young remains the top composer when it comes to orchestral horror scores, very few in this modernization of minimalism in horror does one write with such intrigue as him. So the fact the Young was retained to doing sound design for this movie and while not entirely listenable on CD, it is one of the most effective sound designs I have ever heard. Christopher Young employs no thematic melodies but instead opts for sounds representative of the demon, each families horrible design is given their own noises their own creeping combination, with the family being burned alive in Horror in The Canisters being the most memorable. Each scene is guided by Young's score of assorted screeches and bangs that alone would unnerve you even when it is played away from the movie. Young does write a theme that unfortunately never makes it into the film, in the cue Sinister. A light eerie piano melody plays over the various sounds Young provides. Young then provides an additional presentation in Sinister Remix (The Rite of Left) which is actually the most stand out cue on album. This presentation helps save the listening of the experience of the album because to put it blunty this score exists solely for the screen. Very little of it is listenable off of the screen and I gave the score an 8 given to just how effective the score is in film. On album the score is more of a 3 due to the sound design being rather unlistenable outside its context, but Sinister and Sinister Remix are the albums saving grace. Its short, its bitter sweet, and one of the most outstanding horror scores in a long, long time.
SINISTER is a frightening new thriller from the producer of the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films and the writer-director of THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE. Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.

Composer Christopher Young — veteran of such horror classics as The Grudge, Ghost Rider and Hellraiser — adds an epic opus to his long list of terrifying classics.
