The acclaimed pianist, composer, and experimental musician utilizes piano, strings and orchestra to explore a wide range of sounds that provide a rich backdrop to the mission to Mars thriller.
The film directed by Joe Penna and co-written by Penna and Ryan Morrison, and produced by XYZ Films, Augenschein Filmproduktion and Rise Pictures, and starring Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Daniel Dae Kim & Shamier Anderson, streams on Netflix since April 22, 2021.

On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Facing dwindling resources and a potentially fatal outcome, the crew is forced to make an impossible decision.

Says Bertelmann, “Working on Stowaway and collaborating with director Joe Penna was a special experience in many respects: Joe, who is a musician himself, gave me a lot of freedom to explore different sounds and we had a joint understanding of the purposes the music should serve. This facilitated the compositional process, which was extremely helpful given the considerable amount of music the film needed. The music for Stowaway is one of my favorite scores so far.”

About Volker Bertelmann
Volker Bertelmann is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and experimental musician. His score for Garth Davis’s Oscar-nominated film Lion, composed in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran, was awarded an Australian AACTA Award and received nominations for multiple awards, among others for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Award.

Since then, Bertelmann has provided music for a large number of films and TV shows, most recently the Showtime series Your Honor, starring Bryan Cranston. In addition, he scored the music for the Emmy-and BAFTA-nominated mini-series Patrick Melrose, the BBC- commissioned crime series Dublin Murders, Netflix’s blockbuster movie of the summer 2020, The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron, Summerland with Gemma Arterton, Francis Lee’s romantic drama Ammonite, and the sci-fi movie Stowaway starring Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette, premiering on Netflix April 22. He is currently scoring Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man.

Since 2018, he is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Volker Bertelmann, who in his solo work goes by the name Hauschka, is a uniquely innovative pianist who is renowned both for his trademark sound, which he achieves by preparing the piano with various objects, and his ability to improvise entire performances. His output is prodigious: he tours extensively and has produced over twenty albums and EPs. Bertelmann has composed for soloists like mandolinist Avi Avital, as well as for ensembles and orchestras such as the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and his many collaborations include recordings with the Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn.
