The Social Dilemma

Lakeshore Records presents The Social Dilemma - Music from The Netflix Original Documentary Available digitally, February 12, 2021 Music By Mark Crawford, featuring A Cover Of “I Put A Spell On You” performed by Brandi Carlile & Renée Elise Goldsberry

Lakeshore Records is thrilled to announce digital release of music from the critically-acclaimed Netflix original documentary The Social Dilemma, directed by Jeff Orlowski and produced by Larissa Rhodes.

The album is comprised of a dynamic and otherworldly score from award-winning composer Mark Crawford and includes a cover of the classic song “I Put a Spell on You,” performed by GRAMMY-winning artists Brandi Carlile and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
The documentary film had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2020, and 38 million households chose to watch the film in its first 28 days on Netflix. The Social Dilemma is available for streaming on Netflix, and the album will be available on all digital platforms on Friday, February 12.

The Social Dilemma blends documentary investigation and narrative drama to disrupt the disrupters, unveiling the hidden machinations behind everyone’s favorite social media and search platforms. The border between what sounds human and what sounds like a machine was the kernel of a concept that led to composer Mark Crawford forming what became the score for the film.

“The Social Dilemma album is a complex and versatile score that takes listeners down a spiraling path of a gradual synthesizer takeover,” says Crawford. “Illuminated through a blend of classical orchestral film score elements and vintage synthesizers, I created a dilemma in musical form, pitting humanity and technology against one another, mirroring the film’s narrative arc.”
“As Skyler Gisondo’s character takes a trip down the rabbit hole of disinformation and radicalization, and Sophia Hammons’ character grapples with doses of digital social approval, the distorting of reality is reflected through instrumentation and breakdown of musical form,” he adds.

The film features Nina Simone’s cover of “I Put a Spell on You,” and the album closes with a new rendition of the song. “Inspired by current events and the unprecedented times in which we are living, the cover of ‘I Put a Spell on You,’ performed by the powerful voices of Brandi Carlile and Renée Elise Goldsberry, adds a hauntingly beautiful and bewitching aspect to the song’s original lyrics, while incorporating a new message to elevate the spell that has been cast on our society through social media and search platforms.
The arrangement pays homage to past covers of the classic song, and infuses it with electronic and acoustic elements mined from the film’s score,” says Mark Crawford.
