The Black Bear Pictures and Scott Free Productions film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite based on the National Magazine Award-winning story by Matthew Teague and starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson, and Casey Affleck is in theaters and On Demand now in the U.S., Canada, and select international territories.

Our Friend tells the true, inspiring, heartbreaking and beguiling story of the Teague family—journalist Matt (Casey Affleck), his vibrant wife Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and their two young daughters—when their lives are upended by Nicole’s diagnosis of terminal cancer. As Matt’s responsibilities as caretaker and parent become increasingly exhausting and overwhelming, the couple’s best friend Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel) offers to come and help. But when Dane recognizes the unrelenting toll being taken on Matt, Nicole and the two girls, he puts his life on hold to remain with his friends to the very end. The impact of this generous, albeit complicated, gesture proves greater and more profound than anyone could have imagined.

About Rob Simonsen:
Composer and co-founder of Los Angeles’ artist collective The Echo Society, Rob has contributed to almost a hundred film and television soundtracks in the two decades since he was first asked to provide piano solos to a movie made by high school friends. Having developed a presence in the Portland independent circuit with his first formal commission, Westender (2003), he was invited to assist veteran composer Mychael Danna, and in 2004 relocated to Los Angeles, where he contributed music to Danna’s Academy Award-winning score for 2012’s Life of Pi, as well as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), and Moneyball (2011) amongst a host of others. He and Danna also co-scored (500) Days of Summer in 2009, helping to establish Simonsen as a sought-after talent in his own right.

Since then, Simonsen’s composed music for 2015’s The Age of Adaline – for which he co-wrote the end credits song – in addition to a slew of other films, including Foxcatcher, The Spectacular Now, Nerve, Tully, Love Simon and The Way Back. In addition, Simonsen launched his solo artist career in 2019 with his debut full-length album, Reveries on Sony Masterworks.
