The Pale Horse

MovieScore Media dives into the world of Agatha Christie by releasing the music for the 2-part television miniseries of The Pale Horse, directed by Leonora Lonsdale and scored by Anne Nikitin. Adapted by Christie-veteran Sarah Phepls, The Pale Horse surprisingly doesn’t feature either Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple – rather it focuses in the mysteries surrounding a trio of witches who may or may not have something to do with a series of unexplainable deaths around antique dealer Mark Easterbrook (Rufus Sewell).

“The Pale Horse was such an enjoyable series to score: in essence I had to create the sound of witchcraft in the mind of a man who is possessed by guilt and paranoia. I also had to capture a feeling of London during the swinging 60s without being too literal,” said Anne Nikitin, who worked with singer EERA. “She not only sang on my tracks – for example the Main Titles – but also provided me with a kit of weird and wonderful vocal affects that I was able to edit and manipulate into my score.
The music was performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra who were able to move seamlessly between my quirky orchestral tracks and my haunting, edgy cues. There was even a contrabass clarinet to provide deep, haunting growls, which was a joy to watch and hear in the studio. The score was recorded at Air Studios and orchestrated by Tom Kelly.”

Anne Nikitin is a Canadian composer based in the UK. Her debut into film scoring came when she wrote music for the BAFTA-winning film The Imposter for director Bart Layton, which she followed up with the director’s latest heist movie, American Animals.
Her other recent credits include Captive, a thrilling 8-part Netflix true crime series and This Beautiful Fantastic, a modern day fairytale which was nominated for a Music+Sound Award for Best Original Composition in a Feature Film, and a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Independent Film Score.
Her score for Calibre has been released by MovieScore Media.
