De Stig (Documentary

Hannes De Maeyer & Illuminine launch their music to the inspiring documentary De Stig, a moving film by Eric Goens and Diederd Esseldeurs about the life, and in particular the rehabilitation, of professional cyclist Stig Broeckx.

Now available: music from the moving and inspiring documentary De Stig composed by Hannes De Maeyer & Illuminine.

'De Stig' is a documentary film about the life, but especially the rehabilitation, of promising professional cyclist Stig Broeckx, who crashed heavily on the Baloise Belgium Tour on May 28 in 2016 and then got into in a deep, vegetative coma for over five months. Until Stig opened his eyes in mid-November of that year...

Although it was a hopeful sign, doctors also didn't want to be too enthusiastic. Stig may never be able to speak or walk again. Let alone cycling. Today Stig Broeckx does all that. 'De Stig' is the wonderful story of a young man who has never given up. The film leaves the viewer with a huge amount of respect for this young man and the people around him.

The music for this inspiring story was composed by Hannes De Maeyer in collaboration with Illuminine (Kevin Imbrechts).
Hannes De Maeyer is best known for his collaboration with film companions and Belgian pride Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (who just finished the US production Bad Boys For Life), whose feature films Gangsta, Black and Image he always provided with an impressive film score.
He recently composed the music to Belgian war drama Torpedo and the Dutch crime series Women of the Night, currently worldwide available on Netflix.
Hannes' film music background was combined with the ambient-like and minimalist style of Illuminine, an artist who in the new-classical genre is sometimes compared to big names such as Nils Frahm or Peter Broderick.

Both artists are proud of the collaboration and the end result:
'Diederd Esseldeurs, the director of the film brought us together. Beforehand, we did not know each other in person, we had only heard each other's name and music.
Collaborating was nice, it was a great to discover this musical journey together and we are proud of the end result. The beautiful mix of both of our styles turned out to be an ideal combination to musically accompany the very impressive story of Stig Broeckx.
The biggest challenge consisted of translating Stig's inner world into music.
First of all we see Stig as a true hero: he tries to keep seeing the positive in everything and continues to fight for his rehabilitation every single day. However, throughout the film, you also notice throughout that he's trying to find peace.
He puts away his dreams of becoming a professional cyclist and wants to live a normal life as much as possible. We have tried to incorporate both spheres into the score. You can hear the melancholy, but on the other hand you always hear hope, the idea that everything will turn out fine. '
