The first thing that came to my mind when I first read the screenplay was this as “film noir”.
The story takes place in the 1940’s in a small remote town in the Canary Islands, Spain.
The struggle the main character goes through and the mystery of the plot, mixed with “witches” and “crimes” were pretty obvious to me.
After talking to Armando Ravelo, the director of the film, we realized we also needed an important amount of ethnic elements.
The story had to be told through the eyes of Sagrario, the main character, who is deeply connected to ancestral traditions that marked her since childhood and that she is trying to rescue to her present life and soul journey.
Sagrario’s theme has it’s own variations at the very first scene, being more innocent and bright, and at the very end, being more emotional and heroic.
Women vocals and solo cello play a big role reinforcing the drama along the score and an organ and choir bring the tone for the ‘religious intolerance’.
