The Immortal

Following releases such as Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass and Loi Bao, MovieScore Media once again teams up with Chinese-American composer Christopher Wong and writer/director Victor Vu to release the music from their twelfth collaboration, The Immortal (Người bất tử in Vietnamese). The digital soundtrack release co-incides with the wide theatrical release of the film in Vietnam. The film tells the story of a man who sells his soul to gain immortality, but ends up with the curse of being hunted through his life and never being able to have a permanent relationship with anyone.

“The Immortal was one of the most challenging films I’ve scored because of the scope of the story” says Christopher Wong about the score. “The story starts in French colonial Vietnam in 1915 and spans to the present time, so developing a game plan on how the music should support the narrative was tricky. Also, the main character begins the story tragically and in conflict, then strives for redemption later in the film, so finding the right balance of musical sympathy towards the character was difficult as well. In my twelfth feature film collaboration with director Victor Vu, this was the film we had to talk about the most, to figure out all the puzzles in this story. I feel our efforts brought forth something wonderful and I am excited for the audience to hear this music.”

Composer Christopher Wong has established himself as the go-to composer for the rising generation of Asian American directors. Christopher’s interest in film music began late in college when he was selected by the music department to study privately under Jerry Goldsmith. His first major credit was Journey from the Fall, the debut feature from director Ham Tran – the film received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, while the score earned a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Association for Best New Composer of 2007. Apart from Journey from the Fall, MovieScore Media has also released Christopher’s score for The Rebel, a historical drama set in 1920 French Indochina, the romantic comedy How to Fight in Six Inch Heels and Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass which was Vietnam’s submission for the 2016 Academy Awards.
