Malaga, Spain [The Birthplace Of The Legendary Artist] Hosts The World Premiere Concert Performance Of Genius: Picasso Suite On July 7th
Milan Records Releases Soundtrack Album June 22
Emmy®-nominated composer Lorne Balfe returns for National Geographic’s Genius: Picasso, the critically-acclaimed series’ second season which explores Pablo Picasso’s youth and his adulthood. Last season’s Genius: Einstein main title theme which Balfe co-composed with Hans Zimmer, received an Emmy nomination. This season, Balfe reunited with Zimmer to create a new main theme reflective of the Spanish painter. Picasso is played by both Antonio Banderas and Alex Rich. The Emmy®-nominated, scripted series is from Executive Producers and Academy Award®-winners Brian Grazer & Ron Howard and written and directed by Executive Producer Kenneth Biller. On July 7th, Malaga, Spain will host the world-premiere concert performance of The Genius: Picasso Suite in the Teatro Cervantes by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra under the direction of world-renowned Spanish conductor Oscar Senen. The concert is part of MOSMA, the Malaga film Music Festival. Composer Lorne Balfe is thrilled about the historical importance of the concert premiere, “It is an honor to have the score performed at the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. I am looking forward to hearing this very special performance.” Genius: Picasso is on NatGeo with soundtrack available June 22nd from Milan Records.
Lorne Balfe created both a romantic yet an intensely strong and foreboding score. The composer explains his inspiration, “Picasso once said, ‘Music and art are the guiding lights of the world.’ I wanted the music to illustrate the vibrant colors and abstract scenes he created and reflect his love of music. So that was an interesting color that we could bring to the score. And with Picasso, it really was the fact that his paintings were drastically different to anything that existed at the time, so different instrumentation was used including French accordions, classical Spanish guitar, and introducing saxophone because it was another of the type of music that was influencing him at the time. It was really a collective.”
Lorne Balfe recently completed recording the score for the highly-anticipated action sequel Mission: Impossible – Fallout which opens July 27th 2018. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, stars Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt where he and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) find themselves alongside some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission has gone awry.
Lorne Balfe consistently creates imaginative and memorable scores. The Grammy® Award-winning, EMMY® and BAFTA® nominated composer recent film and TV credits include Churchill, The Lego Batman Movie, and Marcella. He also co-composed the score for the third season of Netflix’s The Crown. Other credits include Terminator Genisys, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, the animated films Home and Penguins of Madagascar, video games Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Crysis 2, and the Skylanders franchise. Additionally, Balfe has produced three of Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-nominated scores, Sherlock Holmes, Inception, and Dunkirk. Balfe was the score producer on The Dark Knight, which earned him and Zimmer a Grammy® Award for “Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.” In 2010, Lorne Balfe was nominated “Discovery of the Year” at the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards in Belgium.
