From He's a Woman, She's a Man to Perhaps Love, Peter Chan seems to have perfected the formula for commercial filmmaking, so it's no surprise that his first stab at the big-budget war epic, The Warlords, has become one of Hong Kong's biggest blockbusters of 2007. Set in the late Qing Dynasty during the Taiping Rebellion, The Warlords stars Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro as sworn brothers and comrades-in-arms whose victories on the battlefield are tested by politics, personal ambition, and romantic rivalry. Based on Chang Cheh's Blood Brothers, the film features action choreography from Ching Siu Tung (Hero) and impressive, large-scale battle scenes befitting of the big screen.
The Warlords is scored by well-known Hong Kong songwriter Chan Kwong Wing and award-winning composer Peter Kam whose previous works include Peter Chan's Perhaps Love and Isabella which won for Best Music at the 56th Berlin Film Festival. Kam's work on The Warlords keeps paces with his earlier achievements, presenting dramatic instrumentals and sensitive scores to complement the film's grand scale.
