Hubert Damen alias Witse zal het wel al verteerd hebben. De makers van de film W. hadden duidelijk een inschattingsfout gemaakt toen ze ervan uitgingen dat de trouwe VRT-kijkers die op de zondagavonden steeds met één tot twee miljoen naar de serie keken, zich een duur cinematicket zouden afschaffen om een dubbelaflevering van de serie te gaan bekijken die waarschijnlijk toch amper twee jaar later op de nationale omroep zou te zien zijn.
W. betekent het definitieve einde van Witse. Het doek is gevallen over de uiterst succesvolle reeks die zich hoofdzakelijk in het Vlaams Brabantse Halle en het pajottenland afspeelde. Dat in tegenstelling tot de film die in de Westhoek werd opgenomen. De muziek voor W. werd terug gecomponeerd door Johan Hoogewijs, de componist die tevens alle afleveringen van de serie voorzag van muziek.
De score is uiterst rustig, bijna relaxerend. Het centrale muziekinstrument in ruim de helft van de tracks is voorbehouden voor de piano. Erik Satie is nooit ver weg. Veel variatie is er echter niet. 28 tracks lang de aandacht houden, is geen sinecure en dat lukt ook hier niet. Opvallend ook is dat de componist niet teruggrijpt naar de bekende thema's uit de serie.
De tracks zijn vaak te kort. Johan Hoogewijs slaagt er wel in te overtuigen met sterke thema’s: ‘Unexpected Visit’, het meer percussiegerichte ‘Appointment at the Marketplace’, ‘Back to Brussels’ en ‘Piano improvisations’ zijn erg kwalitatief.

A retired police inspector, Witse, goes back to his roots to investigate the murder of his niece. He gets confronted with dark memories of his youth, and gets involved in dark internet chats to catch the murderer.
W. – Witse de Film is the feature-length conclusion of the popular Belgian detective series of the same name. Starring Hubert Damen as the titular investigator, Witse was an immensely influential crime procedural made by VRT and broadcast on their één channel. The program ran for nine seasons between 2004-2012 and was followed by a literary franchise as well. Flemish composer Johan Hoogewijs’ music for W. marks an impressive branching out from the medium of television into the medium of film. As the main composer of the show, Hoogewijs was allowed to adapt and conclude his own themes in a satisfying manner as Witse has to solve his toughest case yet. Album highlights include the passionate “Between the Crosses” and “A Bridge Too Far” which contains the score’s hallmark of nervous string patterns. The recording features live strings conducted by Marc Steylaerts, piano solos by Kim Van den Brempt, timpani by Carlo Willems with synths and additional piano parts performed by the composer himself.
