The Out-of-Towners - 06/10 - Review of Andreas Lindahl, submitted at
March Shaiman is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. I really enjoyed his latest effort, the sentimental score for Patch Adams. And now he has come up with yet another entertaining score. The Out-of-Towners is a classic comedy score, with a jazzy big band sound. It is not unique in any way - comedy scores often have a very distinct jazz sound (Silvestri's Parent Trap for instance) - but it's really good and, most of all, very fun. Shaiman writes in the liner notes that he really enjoyed writing the score, and it really shows.

Yet, the score bears some of Shaiman's more romantic trademarks. "Embrace Life" is a typical soft Shaiman cue, with the sweeping strings, solo woodwinds and piano, a la The American President and Patch Adams, which will make "sentimental persons", like me, all warm inside. "We're New Yorkers Now!" includes a short, but wonderful statement of the lyrical love theme. It is hard not liking it.

But it is the swing music that dominates the score. "Fruit & Nuts" is a highlight. It opens really sweet, with light, "classical sounding", strings, before turning into a great big band piece, giving the main theme - which is very good, by the way - a splendid rendition. Also "Seduction" is a superb, and very entertaining cue. It's a charming little bossa nova piece, with a really catchy theme, bound to cheer you up.
