Sasquatch Sunset and single « The Creatures of Nature »

Milan Records has released “The Creatures of Nature” the lead single from Sasquatch Sunset (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by The Octopus Project.

Milan Records has released “The Creatures of Nature” the lead single from Sasquatch Sunset (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by The Octopus Project.

Featuring vocals from film lead Riley Keough, today’s single arrives ahead of the 23-track album’s full release on Friday, April 12, coinciding with Bleecker Street’s limited theatrical release of the film. The film opens nationwide on Friday, April 19, 2024.

The Octopus Project reflect on the song, saying, “The Creatures of Nature comes from a concept that David Zellner had to end the film - we started with a recording of him speak-singing the lyrics and the direction to craft something inspired by ‘Come Wander with Me,’ a folk ballad sung by Bonnie Beecher in a 1964 Twilight Zone episode.

We always knew that this song would be the last thing audiences heard before leaving the theater, and we wanted to create something that musically conveyed the bleak ambiguity in the last shot of the film. Riley Keough perfectly captures that haunting beauty with her voice and we couldn’t have been more honored for her to sing our song. She recently told us that it was the most beautiful song she’s ever sung - our hearts melted.”

About Sasquatch Sunset :

In the misty forests of North America, a family of Sasquatches—possibly the last of their enigmatic kind— embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year. These shaggy and noble giants fight for survival as they find themselves on a collision course with the ever-changing world around them. Starring Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg, acclaimed directors David and Nathan Zellner (Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter) bring you the greatest Bigfoot story ever told.

About The Octopus Project :

Josh Lambert, Yvonne Lambert and Toto Miranda are the co-founders and core members of the multidisciplinary Austin, TX band, The Octopus Project.  Since beginning in 1999, the group has released six studio albums, toured venues and festivals worldwide (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits), created a series of immersive performances/installation works and composed music for video games, commercials and feature films (winning the Special Jury Award for Musical Score at the Sundance Film Festival for Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter).

The band’s film scoring career grew out of their relationship with David & Nathan Zellner, who they got to know as fellow emerging Austin artists in the early 2000’s.  The group began to write scores for the Zellners’ short films, and the brothers would in turn direct music videos for the band.  The Octopus Project’s first feature scores were for the Zellners’ films Kid Thing (2012) and Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (starring Rinko Kikuchi), the latter of which earned the group a Special Jury Award for Musical Score at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  In 2018, the band scored the Zellner western Damsel (starring Robert Pattinson & Mia Wasikowska), which was performed entirely on period-specific instruments — banjo, musical saw, wine glasses, violin & acoustic guitar. In 2022, the band scored the percussion-forward pandemic comedy, The Disappearance of Toby Blackwood (dir. Joe Ahern and feat. Simon Pegg & Luis Guzman).

2024 sees the release of their two latest film scores, the Zellners’ Sasquatch Sunset (starring Jesse Eisenberg & Riley Keough) and the documentary Butterfly in the Sky (dir. by Bradford Thomason & Brett Whitcomb) which presents the story of beloved PBS series Reading Rainbow and its iconic host LeVar Burton.  In contrast to Sasquatch’s craggy, mysterious tones, Butterfly explores the sounds of 70’s PBS synthesizers, creating a universe of bright, colorful ear candy that pairs with the inspiring tone of the documentary and the series itself — channeling the likes of Mort Garson and Philip Glass.
