The Gilded Age season 2

The score by Harry Greyson-Williams and Rupert Greyson-Williams now everywhere available!

Watertower Music has released the soundtrack of season 2 to the HBO® Max Original Limited Series The Gilded Age. Season 2 of THE GILDED AGE begins on Easter morning 1883, with the news that Bertha Russell's bid for a box at the Academy of Music has been rejected. Through the eight episodes of the season, we watch as Bertha challenges Mrs. Astor and the old system and works to not only gain a foothold in Society, but to potentially take a leading role in it.

The Gilded Age (Season 2 Soundtrack from the HBO® Original Series) features the music of acclaimed Emmy-nominated composers Harry Gregson-Williams (the Shrek series, The Martian, The Last Duel) and Rupert Gregson-Williams (The Crown, Hacksaw Ridge, Wonder Woman). When the two composers set out to build a score, one of their main inspirations was the writing of The Gilded Age’s creator/writer/executive producer Julian Fellowes.

The Gregson-Williams Brothers said, 'Picking up where we left off at the end of last season, The Gilded Age Season 2 has provided us with an opportunity to develop our original themes and ideas from Season 1, as well as explore and invent a few new ones. As the Russell family continues to face class obstacles while working to break into New York Society, the sonic palette remains orchestral, with some colorful surprises. Plot twists and turns provide happy grounds for us to explore different instrumentation and thematic material. While Marian and the van Rhijns find love and loss in unexpected places, George Russell embraces the 'tycoon' in railroad tycoon while facing off against strikers in Pittsburgh. Based on historical events, the introduction of a new opera house in New York leads to what was known as the 'opera wars', while Peggy breaks new ground in African-American journalism. Set against the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, Larry's architectural aspirations are given an opportunity to grow. All of these wonderful character and plot developments have allowed us to take what was established in the first season and expand upon it to match Julian Fellowes’s engaging tale of personal and class struggles during the Gilded Age.'

Through their experimentation, the composers leaned into a more contemporary sound by adding various unexpected sounds to this traditional pallet, such as hammer dulcimer, kantele and ukulele, as well as the occasional arpeggiated synth element. The Gregson-Williams Brothers continue, “The multidimensional characters lent themselves to being scored with distinct melodic material that we laid out in the early episodes of Season 1 and developed as their individual stories unfolded.” THE GILDED AGE marks the second time brothers Harry Gregson-Williams and Rupert Gregson-Williams have worked together having previously written the music for the limited series Catch-22, which was directed and executive produced by George Clooney.

The Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of huge fortunes made and lost, and of fierce rivalry between old money and new.
Nowhere is that rivalry more apparent than on East 61st Street, where Marian Brook and her thoroughly old money aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook, live opposite the stupendously rich George and Bertha Russell.
The Russells are both fiercely ambitious, he financially, she socially, and they are determined to reach the highest echelons of New York.
Meanwhile in Brooklyn, Marian’s friend and confidant Peggy Scott forges her own path in the world of the Black elite.
In this glittering world on the brink of the modern age, will the established rules of society prevail, or will the game change entirely?
