Guillaume de Kadebostany has released his first original soundtrack for the documentary Obvious, hackers de l'art by Thibaut Sève.
The documentary tells the story of the Obvious artists’ collective and their journey in making a name for themselves as digital artists shaking up the contemporary art world.
“Without knowing the artist collective, I fantasized a bit about what they might listen to, what they’d like – it’s very interesting to work from that perspective.
I tried to identify different approaches: I wanted to use strings, to go for a very flamboyant type of music, even a bit orchestral which, for me, represents Paris and the Renaissance movement; on the other hand, I wanted a more raw and old-school techno angle.
My objective was to make these two approaches coexist as if they were only one. There was also a third element, experimental, noisy, which could be called “musique concrète.”
In order to have a certain coherence in the soundtrack, I decided to greatly limit my toolkit. I wanted the music to be there to help drive the story forward, for it to be unnoticeable, but present still.
It was a balance to be found; I wanted to venture off the beaten track, to experiment, to offer something not yet found in music for the screen. In fact, I worked with Sony CSL – they have an artificial intelligence laboratory for music and I used their tools for the documentary, which was all the more relevant given Obvious’s use of AI tools in their work.
Artificial intelligence is truly just a tool! There’s no need to be afraid of technology, which has always influenced artists. I can choose to work with a variety of different tools and what’s most important isn’t the technique, but the ideas we have in our minds.” Guillaume de Kadebostany
