Milan Records releases the Fellow Travelers Original Series Soundtrack which is available everywhere, composed by BAFTA® award-winning, Emmy®, and Ivor Novello nominated composer Paul Leonard-Morgan.
Listeners will enter a mesmerizing journey that perfectly complements the show's narrative depth and emotional complexity. With his use of orchestral arrangements, electronic elements, and sound design, Paul Leonard-Morgan creates a score that immerses the audience into the world of the series. Each note is crafted to evoke a wide range of emotions from tension and suspense to profound introspection.
Taking the listeners through the decades, the music seamlessly weaves itself into the fabric of the story, enhancing the characters' dilemmas and victories, making the experience all the more compelling. Paul's ability to capture the essence of the characters and the series leaves a lasting impression on the viewers and elevates Fellow Travelers. The soundtrack follows the recent release of the new limited series produced by Fremantle.
The first two episodes are streaming on Paramount+ with the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME® plan.
Paul Leonard-Morgan notes, « When Ron Nyswaner called and asked me to score the soundtrack to Fellow Travelers, it was not only a huge privilege, but also the start of a working collaboration which happens so rarely in life.
The sensitivity which Ron brought to his writing, and his vision for the series, challenged me to create a sound that would match these characters.
I decided early on that I could see this score being piano, quartet, harp and bass flute. I remember sitting at the start of it all, recording a video of me sitting at my grand piano playing the theme I had come up with. I just KNEW it was the sound of Hawk and Tim, our two main characters who have a forbidden love.
There are many sex scenes in this show, but the music doesn’t treat them in a tender way. Rather the pounding and driving of the strings leading us through the energy of it all.
I knew I wanted to use the reverb chambers of United Recording Studio, LA, for this, to capture the authentic sound of the strings from that era. These chambers were built in the same kind of time as the McCarthy era.
These chambers became integral to my sound, always recording the strings in the same studio and with the same chambers, often booking months in advance to make sure we could keep that sound.
When we found out that the studios were closing, we brought forward our final recording session by 2 weeks, and we were so lucky to be able to persuade them to let us have the final ever recording session at United - something I will remember forever.
Set in the McCarthy era, the score takes us through the forbidden world of gay sex, love, crossing into the world of politics and spies. The bass flute lent itself so well to the intrigue of it all.
Very rarely do I get a chance to score 3 or 4 minute pieces of music where there is no dialogue, and the music just drives the whole scene, but it happens in so many places in this series - the score and the acting working hand in hand to take us on such an emotional journey.
There are very few projects where the creative experience will stay with me forever - this is one of them ».
About Fellow Travelers :
Created for television by Oscar® nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, Homeland), based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, Fellow Travelers is an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the clandestine romance of two very different men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington.
Matt Bomer plays charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith.
They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.
Over the course of four decades, we follow five main characters -- Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams), and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) – as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.
Nyswaner and Bomer executive produce with Robbie Rogers (All American, My Policeman) and Dee Johnson. Daniel Minahan (Halston, American Crime Story: Versace) executive produces and directs the first two episodes. Co-produced by Fremantle with Showtime, Fellow Travelers was produced in Toronto..
