Story Ave follows a gifted teen named Kadir after falling in with the wrong crowd and trying to rob Luis who offers his friendship and shows the young man how his artistic talent could lead to a better life. Pierre Charles infuses his personal touch to create an orchestral score lined with harmonic and melodic tunes to emphasize the heartbreak and pain Kadir feels throughout the film.

He and director Aristotle Torres worked closely together to create a theme that is uniquely Kadir’s but can speak to the character’s roots and connection to the Bronx.

Using a combination of cellos, trumpets, and a twenty-five-piece string ensemble, Pierre aspired to mimic the human voice for the audience to help discover the heartbreak these characters hide and are surviving from.

Pierre Charles notes, 'It’s exciting when a narrative is written that I connect with so deeply. Story Ave explores the themes of coming-of-age, loss, and identity. The score explores lush and sweeping, sometimes classically-leaning, melodies juxtaposed over an urban setting and characters. The intertwining of those themes is what makes Story Ave so special.”

About Story Ave :

South Bronx teen Kadir (Asante Blackk) is a gifted visual artist who loses his way following the death of his younger brother. Overcome with grief and struggling with the pressures of school and family, he escapes into the thrilling yet dangerous world of graffiti gangs, seeking an outlet for the creative force threatening to explode out of him.
To prove himself and join his neighborhood’s ruling gang, Kadir tries to rob no-nonsense MTA conductor Luis (Luis Guzmán) on the Story Ave subway platform. He is caught off guard when Luis agrees to give Kadir the cash if he’ll sit down to a meal with him.

Following their conversation and the delicate, transformative friendship that grows out of it, Kadir sees for the first time how his artistic talent could lead to a better life.

Winner of the Best Cinematography prize at SXSW, this moving and authentic portrait of the South Bronx announces an exciting new cinematic voice in Aristotle Torres and offers a welcome showcase for beloved character actor Guzman and rising star Blackk (This Is Us), alongside a supporting cast of up-and-comers including Alex R. Hibbert (Moonlight), Cassandra Freeman (Bel-Air), Coral Peña (For All Mankind), and Melvin Gregg (The Blackening).

About Pierre Charles :

As a versatile composer with a background in jazz and classical studies, Pierre Charles thrives in sonic environments that blend the sound of traditional scores with contemporary, often electronic and synth-based, elements. In 2019, he was awarded the SABAM Award for Best Young International Composer at the internationally esteemed World Soundtrack Awards in Ghent, Belgium, and in 2023 received a BMI Film & TV Award for his scores on East New York (CBS) and Inventing Anna (Netflix).

Charles has recently completed the score for Gonzo Girl, a feature novel adaptation by Jessica Caldwell directed by Patricia Arquette that premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival.
His latest project is Story Ave, a theatrical release starring Asante Blackk and Luis Guzmán. In 2022, Charles co-composed the score for the Shondaland limited Netflix series, Inventing Anna, with Kris Bowers, as well as co-composed the score for Netflix's They Cloned Tyrone starring Jamie Foxx. In addition to his own projects, Charles has contributed music to several television series and films including Euphoria, Space Jam: A New Legacy, When They See Us, DMZ, Bridgerton, Dear White
People, Mrs. America, Bad Hair, and United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Charles prides himself on his New Orleans heritage, from which he draws much of his early musical influence. He received a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California.

South Bronx native Kadir Grayson is a teen artistic talent on the brink of finding and losing himself at once.
Blinded by the grief of losing his younger brother, Kadir runs away from home. He escapes via the beautifully dark and dangerous world of graffiti. His graf gang Outside The Lines consists of street kids with minds as criminal as they are artistic.
Desperate to join the gang, Kadir attempts to rob Luis, an older Puerto Rican MTA conductor on the Story Ave subway platform.
Luis offers him the cash he needs if Kadir agrees to have a meal with him. For the first time in his life, Kadir entertains the possibility of his artistic talent being a conduit to a better life.
