Operation Daybreak

We thought that the famous unofficial label POO had ceased its activities altogether during the 1980s, but now it seems to be back with the music for Operation Daybreak.

We thought that the famous unofficial label POO had ceased its activities altogether during the 1980s, but now it seems to be back with the music for Operation Daybreak.

This dramatic war film was directed in 1975 by Lewis Gilbert. Based on a true story, this American-Czech-Yugoslav co-production tells how the Czechoslovak government in exile in London decides to set up an operation to assassinate the Reich's protector in Bohemia-Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich (Anton Diffring). To this end, they train and parachute two agents into Czechoslovakia: Jozef Gabčík (Anthony Andrews) and Jan Kubiš (Timothy Bottoms). Once there, with the support of the rest of the Czech resistance, they set up Operation Daybreak until the fateful day of 27 May 1942, when they finally attacked Heydrich...

Despite its excellent direction and remarkable acting, the film was not as successful as had been hoped. Probably because it was released at a time when this type of film had been sufficiently exploited. Then, let's face it: the story is relentlessly negative, and even if the 'heroic' mission was a success, the reprisals that followed were so brutal and far-reaching that its value has to be questioned.

For the music, the producers called on David Hentschel. A sound engineer and main collaborator with the British rock band Genesis, the world of cinema and its music was a first for him, but that didn't stop him from rising to the challenge and accepting the assignment.

The whole recording and mixing process took around three weeks, and the result is a magnificent piece of music that blends electronic and orchestral elements. Presented in the form of a blue LP, this is an unofficial version with a limited edition of 25 copies.
