Praise This (Score)

Award-winning composer Jermaine Stegall, an alumnus of the Universal Composers Initiative, collaborated with the Studio once again to compose the score for the Peacock Original Film, Praise This.

Award-winning composer Jermaine Stegall, an alumnus of the Universal Composers Initiative, collaborated with the Studio once again to compose the score for the Peacock Original Film, Praise This.

The Universal Composers Initiative was created to address a void in data tracking diversity and female representation amongst composers and set out to identify up-and-coming talent at various points in their creative journeys for music production opportunities across the Studio.

Praise This marks Stegall’s first NBCUniversal project since being selected as one of eight composers making up the Initiative’s inaugural class.

Praise This, produced by Will Packer (Girls Trip, Ride Along) and screening now on Peacock, follows a young woman (Chloe Bailey) with dreams of being a superstar who joins an underdog Atlanta praise-team choir in the lead up to the national competition.

The Original Score Album is released by Backlot Music on April 21st.2023.

While Jermaine Stegall’s Praise This score is infused with upbeat funk elements, delicate and earnest cues highlighting themes of family and faith are most prominent.
The composer also wanted to “create an atmosphere of collaboration” to mirror the themes of friendship and creative partnership.
This collaborative atmosphere also parallels his fruitful relationship with the Universal Composers Initiative.

As his first NBCUniversal film since his tenure in the Universal Composers Initiative, the composer found that the support from the Initiative continued during his scoring of the film. “It’s not just lip-service,” explained Stegall; “these guys have been on the phone with me, giving me advice, giving guidance, just adding fuel to the fire of my own career.”
All eight composers from the Universal Composers Initiative’s inaugural 2018-20 class have become credited production composers, with 75 percent of those projects coming from the NBCU portfolio. Stegall will compose the score for another upcoming NBCUniversal project, The Oracle.
