Milan Records announces the October 7 release of Catherine Called Birdy (Amazon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), an album of music featured in the new film by writer and director Lena Dunham.
Available for preorder now, the album features an eclectic array of music from a team of talented musicians and artists.
Award-winning composer Carter Burwell contributes an original score performed by GRAMMY Award-winning ensemble Roomful Of Teeth, whose vocal performances provide the foundation for the film’s larger sonic landscape.
Also included on the soundtrack are 7 cover songs, which have been reinterpreted in the Medieval tradition by executive music producers Luis Felber and Matt Alchin and performed by UK singer-songwriter Misty Miller. Making its debut today as the album’s lead single is a cover of Supergrass hit “Alright,” which was featured heavily in the film’s official trailer.
Rounding out the collection’s 25 tracks are two original tracks performed by the film’s lead Bella Ramsey and Shuga. Catherine Called Birdy is available in select theaters now and will debut exclusively on Prime Video Friday, October 7 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Of the soundtrack, director Lena Dunham says, “I spent years trying to work with the iconic Carter Burwell. Apparently he was seduced by the idea of a period piece about getting your period- period period music, and he had always wanted to do an all choral score. The result, melded with Luis Felber and Matt Allchin's Medieval iterations of songs that evoke teen emotion, evokes the most teenage emotions in me. Misty Miller becomes the troubadour who narrates Birdy's inner life. The song selection- music that reminds me of the intensity and power of adolescence- is a tribute to Birdy's inner life and the power of the teenage girl as a timeless icon of strength and wild inspiration. I hope it has you singing in harmony with yourself.”
“It’s unusual for me to read a script and not only know what the music should be, but who should perform it,” adds composer Carter Burwell. “On reading Lena’s script, I immediately thought it should be a vocal score, both to avoid the question of using medieval instruments and to put us directly inside Birdy’s head, and it should be performed by Roomful of Teeth, who could make it both idiosyncratic and beautiful. It was huge thrill to work with both Lena and these amazing musicians on this score.”
About Catherine Called Birdy
The year? 1290. In the Medieval English village of Stonebridge, Lady Catherine (known as Birdy) is the youngest child of Lord Rollo and the Lady Aislinn. Her playground is Stonebridge Manor, a house that, like the family, has seen better days.
Financially destitute and utterly greedy, Rollo sees his daughter as his path out of financial ruin by marrying her off to a wealthy man for money and land. But Birdy, like all the great teen heroines, is spirited, clever and adventurous –and ready to put off any suitor that comes in increasingly ingenious ways.
Her imagination, defiance and deep belief in her own right to independence put her on a collision course with her parents. When the most vile suitor of all arrives, they are presented with the ultimate test of love for their daughter.
