Original score from the 2022 historical action drama feature film directed by Petr Jákl, starring Ben Foster, Matthew Goode and Michael Caine, produced by J.B.J. Film, Genesy, Double Tree Entertainment and Wog Film, released by The Avenue Entertainment (USA).
The Story: The story of fifteenth century Czech icon and warlord Jan Zizka, who defeated armies of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire.
The Score: “‘We need a powerful love theme’ was the first sentence director Petr Jákl said to me when discussing ideas for the score for Medieval. Music to a composer’s ears! Despite being a film overflowing with brutality and death, our guiding light was always finding the heart of each character’s journey in the story, especially Žižka’s evolving relationship with Katherine. As such, the score is heavily thematic, twisting themes inside out of each other as the storylines mature. Given the sprawling nature and time period of the film, I relied heavily on solo voice and strings, multiple choirs and the orchestra all recorded in the Czech Republic. I wanted the brutal elements of the score to convey a sense of discord as if the audience were thrust into the center of battle so most of the percussion was recorded via an underwater contact microphone and the brass was arranged in a circular formation in the studio to surround the listener. This opened up the more tender and tragic moments to fully capitalize on the beautiful performances of our soloists, choirs and orchestra, allowing them to truly soar.” – Philip Klein
The Composer: Philip Klein’s music has been heard in film and television projects for Sony, Disney, Pixar, Lionsgate, ABC and CBS. Recent projects include Sony Animation’s Wish Dragon, The Last Full Measure and Neon’s Pig. He also penned 18 new orchestral arrangements for Aerosmith’s Las Vegas residency, Deuces Are Wild. As an additional writer, Philip has collaborated with some of the finest composers working in film and TV, including Harry Gregson-Williams, Carter Burwell, Alex Heffes and Fil Eisler. He is also in demand as an orchestrator, having had the honor of working with James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat, Ludwig Göransson, Hildur Guđnadóttir, Steve Jablonsky, David Buckley, Stewart Copeland and several other amazing artists. Recent orchestration credits include the Oscar winning Joker, Oscar nominated News of the World and Disney’s The Mandalorian.
