After a whole series of succesful avant premieres,
U-235 now plays in Belgian theaters, before its international distribution in Japan, France & Germany, stay tuned!

U-235, the first Flemish submarine film ever - with renown actors Koen De Bouw, Sven De Ridder, Gilles De Schryver, Stefan Perceval, Joren Seldeslachts, Bert Haelvoet, Robrecht Vanden Thoren, Ella-June Henrard and Vic De Wachter in the lead roles - was directed by Sven Huybrechts and produced by A Team Productions (known for projects such as Black, Image, Baghdad Messi).

This spectacle movie is set during World War II and tells the story of a gang of Flemish rebels with a secret mission: they have to sail from Congo to the United States with a hijacked German U-boat carrying a cargo with which the Allies might win the war...

Hannes De Maeyer is best known for his collaboration with film companions and Belgian pride Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, whose feature films Gangsta, Black and Image he always provided with an impressive film score.

For the original music to U-235, Hannes composed a 'good old nostalgic symphonic film score' which was recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra, known for their collaboration with Johann Johannsson for his music to Sicario.

Composer Hannes De Maeyer about the process of creating music for U-235:
''I have always been a big fan of music from WW2-related films and games such as 'Medal Of Honor' by Michael Giacchino & Christopher Lennertz, 'Saving Private Ryan' by John Williams or 'Band of Brothers' by Michael Kamen: all instant classics! In preparation of 'U-235' I have completely immersed myself in that world. The major difficulty was finding the balance between nostalgia without making it sound too old-fashioned. That is something we, together with the director and the team from A Team Productions, have been working hard on. There was no doubt that we needed this score to be one recorded with large symphonic orchestra full of prominent brass instruments and percussion (snares, timpani, cymbals). That was just what this film needed. The references to and the atmosphere of nostalgic films such as 'The Great Escape' and 'Indiana Jones' lies in all aspects of the film, including the score.'

Director Sven Huybrechts about the collaboration with Hannes De Maeyer:
'The stunning film score Hannes created for 'Torpedo' (intl title: 'U-235'), perfectly reinforces the tone and atmosphere that we wanted to put into the project. I thought it was important to give Hannes enough freedom, but as a result I really needed to leave the film’s soul into his hands. The result is truly unbelievably powerful, since the music has grown into a grand, epic and even Hollywoodian score which, just like the film, is fairly unique in Belgium. In the meantime, I cannot stop whistling the main theme at home.'
