40 jaar na John Carpenter's originele klassieker, die een blueprint werd voor het genre waarin een zwijgende gemaskerde psychopaat op een groepje tieners jaagt, tijdens Halloween ( met een toen nog onbekende ijzersterke motivatie om gewoon alles en iedereen die in de weg staat van zijn doel, naar de andere wereld te steken, hakken, jagen of traumatiseren.
John Carpenter en Debra Hill zorgden voor een thriller die vrijwel zonder een druppel bloed, maar vol met Hitchcock-suspense en vernieuwende camera technieken een weg plaveitten voor het 'Slashergenre' dat na 1978 tot een ongekend populair sub- genre binnen de horror cinema bleek.
40 jaar en 7 sequels + 2 remakes later, keert Michael Myers' oorspronkelijke bedenker, regisseur/ componist en inmiddels 'Master of Horror' - betitelde brein :John Carpenter terug naar de roots van zijn eerste succesformule.
Deze keer als producent van/ en componist voor David Gordon Green's vervolg op de originele Halloween, die opnieuw een andere route inslaat dan we hadden verwacht.
Mocht de film zelf geen succes worden ( iets wat ik me haast niet voor kan stellen) dan zal de terugkeer van Carpenter als componist dat absoluut wel waarborgen.
Halloween 2018 keert terug met een aantal bekende thema's uit 1978...en brengt ook een paar nieuwe en verfrissende thema's, die kenmerkend zijn voor John Carpenter, maar nu een extra dimensie krijgen door Carpenter's zoon Cody en gitarist Daniel Davies, die nu een soort van Holy Trinity vormen.
Wat het meest opvalt, naast het iconische Halloween Theme, is het nieuwe Laurie's Theme.
Ik denk dat Carpenter in 1978 het thema voor Laurie Strode componeerde op gevoel van onschuld en zorgeloos.
40 jaar later plus natuurlijk een traumatische Halloweennacht, is het personage alles behalve zorgeloos en onschuldig...
Er is duidelijk over nagedacht.
Het nieuwe Laurie's Theme wordt tevens gebruikt voor Allyson. Ik ga er vanuit dat ze de dochter of kleindochter van Laurie is.(..sorry mensen, de film is op dit moment nog niet officieel uit..Geweldig!)
Naast terugkerende thema's die we ongetwijfeld herkennen uit de '78 film, horen we nu ook nieuwe maar steeds terug kerende thema's en besef ik hoe heerlijk het is om John Carpenter weer terug te horen voor zijn beroemde Halloween score.

When the new Halloween movie hits theaters in October 2018, it will have the distinction of being the first film in the canon with creator John Carpenter’s direct involvement since 1982’s Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Carpenter serves on the new David Gordon Green-directed installment as an executive producer, a creative consultant, and, thrillingly, as a soundtrack composer, alongside his collaborators from his three recent solo albums, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.
The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978, when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green’s film, its familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape’s knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic percussion. While the new score was made with a few more resources than Carpenter’s famously shoestring original, its musical spirit was preserved.
Halloween is co-written and directed by Gordon Green and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Virginia Gardner and Nick Castle.
