In 1971 Ennio Morricone composed this score to the thriller by Dario Argento known in the U.S.A. as Four Flies on Grey Velvet. With an orchestra conducted by Bruno Nocolai, this soundtrack marked a giant step for cinematic sound as a whole and was defining of the Ennio Morricone aesthetic. This soundtrack is filled with the gripping tension and exotic flurries of that define the work of the 20th century master, but most striking is his unorthodox juxtaposition of sound and techniques that have roots in the avant-garde yet are so in keeping with the atmospheric sensibilities of soundtrack composition. Fans of the soundtrack genre should take note of this phenomenal work, one of his best of the decade.
