The Mist - 04/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
In 2007 Stephen King's horrifying novella 'The Mist' was adapted into a nightmarish film by Frank Darabont. The movie met mixed reviews but did receive praise (and criticism) for the new ending put into place. The story centers around a group of people trapped in a convenience store, the entire outside is completely covered in mist and within it lies various insect-like creatures. For a job like this, Darabont turned to veteran composer Mark Isham to deliver a score as strange as the film itself.

For the most part, Isham's score is best described as synth noise. Most of the score feels like a bunch of sound effects mixed together. 'Tentacles', 'Bugs', and 'Spiders' are the only cues that actually come close to actual music. Here, Isham employs some of the same, strange synthetic sounds but supplements them with percussion and screeching instruments. The rest of the music on the score is mostly just background synth that hardly resembles music.

There's not much to say about Isham's score. Mostly, the cues are just synth beats supplemented by the occasional percussion and violin. The two non-score tracks on the album, 'The Vicious Blues' and 'The Host of Seraphim' are the most music you will get out of the short album. Another thing; out of the 30 minutes of music, barely 20 minutes are actually score music. Not that it matters anyway, considering the score is a bunch of sound effects. Overall, the only reason to purchase 'The Mist' is for the last two songs on the album. Otherwise, skip it.
