Triumph of the Spirit is an American film directed by Robert Milton Young, released in 1989 and starring Willem Dafoe and Edward James Olmos.
During World War II, a Greek Olympic medalist boxer is taken away and imprisoned.
He participates in boxing matches, all to his advantage.
The film follows the early life story of Salamo Arouch, though it takes some artistic liberties including the early introduction of wife Allegra (a pseudonym for Marta Yechiel), whom Arouch did not actually meet until after the liberation of the camp.
Arouch lived in Tel Aviv, Bat Yam and Rishon LeZion and died on April 26, 2009. He had been weakened by a stroke he suffered around 1994 and had been in declining health for six months prior to his death.
