3 new Varese Limited releases

Bitter Harvest, Before I Wake & USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage

Varese Sarabande has released 3 new limited soundtrack titles. Benjamin Walfish's Bitter Harvest, The Newton Brothers and Danny Elfman's Before I Wake and Laurent Eyquem's USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage.

An epic new score from Benjamin Wallfisch, whose most recent scores include Hidden Figures, A Cure For Wellness and Gamba. This is a sprawling, exceptional work that gave the composer an epic story to explore. Absolutely one of the best scores of the year so far.

Based on one of the most overlooked tragedies of the 20th century, Bitter Harvest is a powerful story of love, honor, rebellion and survival as seen through the eyes of two young lovers caught in the ravages of Joseph Stalin’s genocidal policies against Ukraine in the 1930s. As Stalin advances the ambitions of communists in the Kremlin, a young artist named Yuri (Max Irons ) battles to survive famine, imprisonment and torture to save his childhood sweetheart Natalka (Samantha Barks ) from the “Holodomor,” the death by starvation program that ultimately killed millions of Ukrainians. Against this tragic backdrop, Yuri escapes from a Soviet prison and joins the anti Bolshevik resistance movement as he battles to reunite with Natalka and continue the fight for a free Ukraine.

Filmed on location in Ukraine, this epic love story brings to light one of the most devastating chapters of modern Europe. The stellar cast also includes Barry Pepper, Tamer Hassan and Terence Stamp. Director George Mendeluk co wrote the screenplay with Richard Bachynsky Hoover based on Bachynsky Hoover’s original story.
Roadside will release the film in the U.S. on February 24, 2017.

Before I Wake is a powerfully emotional score which, at turns, is both beautiful and frightening. This symphonic score by The Newton Brothers also features a major contribution (14:00 of music) by Danny Elfman!

Foster parents Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane) Hobson welcome 8-year-old Cody into their home. The boy tells Jessie that he's terrified to fall asleep, but she assumes it's just a natural fear for any young child. The couple become startled when their dead biological son suddenly appears in their living room. To their surprise, Cody's dreams can magically become real but so can his nightmares. Mark and Jessie must now uncover the truth behind Cody's mysterious ability before his imagination harms them all.

A wonderful new score by Laurent Eyquem. This will be very exciting news for those who know Laurent from his exceptional scores for Copperhead (2013) and Momentum (2015).

For USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, Eyquem delivers a powerful 1945 set score. Stirring orchestra writing combined with a few jazz and dance hall pieces evoking the period, make this an epic new work from one of film music's brightest new names.

Nicolas Cage, Tom Sizemore and Thomas Jane star in the harrowing tale of real life American heroes shipwrecked in shark infested waters in the waning days of World War II.
