Two very rare LPs from two of Britain’s premier song-writers, Vivian Ellis and Lionel Bart, represent the ending of one era and the beginning of another. It might seem that Ellis (from such a polite background) would be a strange bedfellow for Bart (working class London) but these recitals make an interesting pairing. Both are excellent at putting over their own songs, with Ellis accompanying himself on piano while Bart is backed by a large orchestra. There can be no finer version of Bart’s ‘When does the ravishing begin?’ than his own, and to hear Ellis deliver ‘Other people’s babies’ (with its immaculate A P Herbert lyric) is a lesson in style. Ellis gives an enchanted view of what by 1960 was almost a lost world, while Bart seizes the day with all the vigour of a young man.
