L'utilisation audacieuse de la musique de Stanley Kubrick dans ses films était l'un des aspects qui le distinguait.
Il a manipulé la musique avec sensibilité, invention et respect et il a abouti à la création de certaines des scènes les plus indélébiles de l'histoire du cinéma.
Quelques exemples: l'utilisation de 'We'll Meet Again' de Vera Lynn au cours d'un montage de quatre-vingt-douze secondes d'explosions nucléaires à la fin de Docteur Folamour; le déploiement de valses de Strauss pour créer un élégant ballet cosmique pendant la séquence d'accostage de 2001, l'Odyssée de l'espace, et l'utilisation très controversée de 'Singin' in the Rain 'de Gene Kelly lors de l'attaque de F. Alexander et de sa femme par Alex et ses Droogs dans Orange Mécanique!
Cet album comprend aussi des pièces musicales des chefs-d'œuvre de Kubrick, complétés par des morceaux que le réalisateur a utilisés comme «pistes temporaires» pendant la production et avec l'intention de les utiliser dans le film, ou pour décider de les remplacer.
Sur 2001, le scherzo de 'Midsummer Night's Dream' de Felix Mendelssohn (utilisé pour des scènes d'apesanteur) et Antarctica Suite de Vaughan Williams pour les effets de Stargate et les scènes sur la lune ont été utilisés en avant-première du film .
Sur Eyes Wide Shut, 'Lieder Im Triebhaus' de Wagner a été un thème important dans la production pendant plus d'un an avant d'être remplacé….
