Un peu à la manière du récent 'The Eagle' de Atli Örvarsson, Lorne Balfe a composé pour 'Ironclad' une bande originale profondément ancrée dans un contexte, ici plus historique que géographique: le Moyen Âge du XIIIè siècle. Le compositeur confirme une tendance générale adoptée par les productions Remote Control depuis 'Sherlock Holmes', qui offre aux instruments traditionnels une place toujours plus centrale.
Lorne Balfe, qui a travaillé avec Hans Zimmer sur ses dernières B.O., s'en tire avec les honneurs pour son premier grand projet solo. Il emprunte à 'Sherlock Holmes' ses lignes de violons grinçantes et entêtantes, à 'Inception' son 'booom-boooooooooom' indescriptible ('King John Arrives'), y ajoute quelques sonorités orientales et nous pond un travail épique, vibrant et très crédible, enraciné dans une solide base faite de choeurs en tout genre, utilisés habilement et dans une diversité épatante. Intimistes dans 'The Art of Naivety', guerriers dans 'The Battle Begins', romantiques dans 'Marshall and Isabel', solennels dans 'The Magna Carte' ou gandioses dans 'Insidiae', toutes les possibilités de la voix humaine semblent avoir été exploitées ici.
