rench director Manuel Pradal (Marie Baie des Anges) directs Harvey Keitel and Andie MacDowell in this 2002 crime film about an FBI agent (Keitel) stationed in Sicily and charged with unraveling the murder of an informant while protecting the only known witness to the informant’s murder – his 11-year-old son.
Not to be confused with the Renaissance painter of the same name, Italian composer Carlo Crivelli (Vincere), reteaming with Pradal for the first time since their 1997 international hit Marie Baie des Anges, employs a lush blend of strings and woodwinds to underscore the melancholia of memory – a key theme in a film in which the unrevealed past constitutes an ever-present pain for all involved. Uncharacteristically romantic and melodramatic for a crime film – even employing acoustic guitar and a solo soprano at various points – it’s a score that speaks to the characters’ inner turmoil more than external events – an impassioned orchestral plea for help from a lonely island.
