BC Network's Wild Palms was seen by some as an attempt to duplicate the cult phenomenon of Twin Peaks, by others as an original sci-fi story set in the near future which had nothing in common with David Lynch's series. Probably the best comparison is to the numerous tie-ins that the series spawned before it came out, this soundtrack CD being one of them (the book was the other). Ryuichi Sakamoto's stamp is on the opening theme, with his intriguing blend of Eastern and Western scales and harmonies filtered through his electronic pop sensibilities. Elsewhere he sounds like Michael Nyman ('Harry to Hospital'), a demo track for home studio recording software ('Mimezine'), Harold Budd ('Go Chip/Tommy'), or himself ('Senator's Farewell'). A sleek, yet hardly groundbreaking (compared to Twin Peaks) soundtrack. The remaining five tracks are classic songs from the '60s used in the show, and the quality is hard to argue. You may just want to fast forward to these after a while.
