De score van de 2003 remake 'Willard' van regisseur Glen Morgan ( The X-Files)is zo'n opvallend fraai staaltje werk van wijlen Shirley Walker, waar maar geen soundtrack release van kwam.
10 jaar na dato is nu dan eindelijk een van Walkers fijnste film composities op CD uitgebracht. Shirley Walker scoorde o.a. de eerste drie Final Destination-films, maar behaalde haar eerste grote hit met 'Batman: Mask Of Phantasm' in 1993. De score voor 'Willard' word gezien als haar grootste succes, mede vanwege de vele lagen in persoonlijkheid bij het hoofdpersonage van de film. Walker zet een Bernard Herrmann-achtige score neer met veel suspense strijkers en het meest opvallende..haar accordeon die de film een tijdloos en authentieke touch geeft. Crispin Glover weet op briljante wijze het personage van Willard leven in te blazen, en puur vanuit dat oogpunt schreef Walker de muziek voor de ontwikkelingen in de film.
Het is jammer dat Shirley niet meer onder ons is, want 'Willard' is het hoogtepunt van haar muzikale carriere. Voor de echte filmmuziek liefhebber is deze schijf dus verplichte kost, eindelijk is er weer een gedenkwaardige score, al duurde het tien jaar voor hij werd uitgebracht.

Lee Ermey, Laura Elena Harring and Kimberly Patton, and directed by Glen Morgan. This brilliant and haunting orchestral horror score is one of Walker’s finest, incorporating a unique, almost Herrmannesque use of accordions. Thematically rich, Walker’s spellbinding music is as thoughtfully heartbreaking as it is atmospheric. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by James Nelson, this special release of 3000 units features in-depth liner notes by writer John Takis that include comments from the director and others. Note: the song “Ben” as performed by Crispin Glover was not available to license for this release.
