A Shakespeare play with music by Duke Ellington? In 1963 that´s exactly what happened when the Stratford Festival commissioned the Duke to write a score to accompany a modern-dress version of the play.
And now a new production using the Ellington score has just opened on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater, produced by Tony Randall´s National Actors Theatre. The Ellington score as adapted by gifted composer Stanley Silverman is classic Duke: moody, jazzy, and filled with the Duke´s trademark rhythms and harmonies. The play´s Thirties setting perfectly dovetails with Ellington´s shimmering music.
This disc is almost all world premiere material and will be of vital interest to anyone who loves great jazz, great theater and great Ellington!
