Vanaprastham--The Last Dance is an acclaimed film by Indian director Shaji N. Karun. The story combines dance with an examination of the conflicts between romance and family, and of the relationship between father and son. The music is by Zakir Hussain, and the soundtrack works as a beautiful and atmospheric collection that can be enjoyed without any experience of the film, or even if you would not normally listen to conventional film music.
Zakir Hussain is one of India's leading classical tabla players and an active collaborator with many leading musicians, from Van Morrison and George Harrison to John McLaughlin and Jan Gabarek. His first solo album was Making Music, he co-created the award-winning Planet Drum and founded Shakti with McLaughlin and has his own band, The Rhythm Experience. In the movie world, he composed music for Bertolucci's Little Buddha. For Vanaprastham he employs an ensemble of 10 for a work which grows out of the Indian classical-improvisation tradition, adding further percussion and luxuriously detailed richly ambient production values to create a calmly beguiling series of musical soundscapes. Central to the score are 'Subhadra', Parts 1 & 2, deeply descriptive melodies which place ethereal bells against gorgeous flute and violin, and the exceptionally lovely song, 'Smile'.
