After IL CAMORRISTA (1986) and Oscar winner NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO (1988) Giuseppe Tornatore directed his third film for the cinema STANNO TUTTI BENE (Everybody’s fine), released in 1990. Marcello Mastroianni plays the role of Matteo Scurro, a retired Sicilian bureaucrat and widower with five grown children who all live throughout Italy. As a surprise he wants to visit every one of them and travels from Sicily to Naples, Florence, Rome, Milan and Turin. It is a kind of road movie. The film is beautiful shot in the style of Fellini. An American remake of this Italian film titled EVERYBODY’s FINE, starring Robert De Niro, music by Dario Marianelli, came out in 2009. Ennio Morricone composed the music for the Italian version and it was his second film with Giuseppe Tornatore, after NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO (1988). The director as a great fan of Maestro Morricone wanted him to play a role in this film. Very unusual, as Morricone had never played a role in any film. Then he did accept, playing the conductor of the orchestra that performs the overture from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi in the famous Opera house of La Scala in Milan. Andrea Morricone has helped the father on writing the track Sogno (Dream), that is in the dream sequence of the movie. There are various orchestrations that have unusual instruments. The track Il vino e l’uva (wine and grapes) is a waltz played in a melodramatic way with an accordion in a low octave without vibrato to not make it sounding French. While La salina has the use of a pan flute and Nel tempio (in the temple) a Sitar from India. The score is rich of themes and variations in music and themes and makes the cd interesting and pleasant to listen to. This re-issue contains 10:45 of inedit material approved by the composer.
