In this documentary about murder, innocence, and the inconsistency of 'truth', the strength of Philip Glass's score lies in its quiet sensitivity and restraint. At times it's easy to forget that there is even music at all. The album contains many of the engrossing interviews with the people involved in this case concerning the shooting of a Dallas policeman: the men arrested for the crime, the questionably impartial legal representation, and the quirky, idiosyncratic eyewitnesses. Most chilling is David Harris's roundabout confession at the end of the soundtrack, in which he calmly tells director Errol Morris that the only reason why his friend Randall Adams was wrongfully accused and convicted of the murder was because he simply lied to the police and they believed him. Throughout the accounts and verbal re-creations, Glass accentuates the story's growing pathos with muted themes coaxed out of an arrangement of strings, keyboard, and horns. These themes are reused and recycled, giving equal weight to all of tales told without allowing any character to seem more or less guilty or culpable than another. The Thin Blue Line is both a moving and frightening story, made more powerful by Glass softening his distinctive voice and letting the colour of injustice bleed into the fore.
