Congo

When I bought this at a local CD shop, the owner said he'd had a bet that no-one would ever buy Congo as evidently the album had been sitting, waiting to be purchased since it was originally released. I guess that's the problem of selling soundtrack CDs in Guernsey; if I don't buy them, probably nobody will. Anyway, Congo seemed like a half baked attempt to cash in on the success of Jurassic Park and the stellar fame that it had given its writer, Michael Crichton. Ironically, plans to film Congo previously hadn't come to fruition, but the technical requirements to construct convincing gorillas was deemed such that the film could be made. Not entirely sure they should have bothered to be honest since it went from being enjoyable hokum to just being bad without the flair or outstanding effects of Spielberg's dinosaur effort.

Poor old Jerry Goldsmith got yet another bum deal with Congo in the great long list of cheap imitations of films scores by John Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark/King Solomon's Mines, Superman/Supergirl and so on), but as usual Jerry has managed to pull a really rather good score out of his box of tricks. The lilting main theme, introduced in the rather good Spirit of Africa is actually pretty memorable and Lebo M's almost obligatory African stylings only add to the flavour of the score. The jungle percussion and synth noises are all brought out at one time or another with great effect; the liner notes even have gushing thanks to the percussion section and they do indeed do a splendid job. There are a few gentle moments such as No Customs, but this is mainly a score for action and thrasing about with that Goldsmithian flair that so many ape (oooh, that's poor), but few achieve. Highlights include the turbulent Amy's Nightmare and the dynamic and brassy Kahega.

From what I recall from the film, the final cue sounded very badly edited, jumping from one idea to another. The album, however, seems to either be how the music was originally written or simply edited together more comfortably. Whatever the case, the final cue sums up all the best ideas in the score and rounds out with a rousing rendition of Spirit of Africa. Unreasonable amounts of criticism have been heaped upon Congo when other equally good Goldsmith scores have been more highly praised. From the film he was provided with, I doubt that Goldsmith could have managed to write something any more inspiring or exciting. I would confess that it's not quite on a par with the often excellent The Ghost and the Darkness, but it's certainly not nearly as bad in comparison as some people have made out. As a footnote, the track order on the cover is not the correct listing. This can only be found on CD itself. Very odd. The listing below is the correct order.

De avonturenfilm Congo vertelt het verhaal van een rijke industrieel, die z'n zoon naar Congo stuurt om daar vermeende enorme diamanten te vinden. Maar hij raakt vermist en er wordt een team opgetuigd om zoonlief te gaan zoeken. Dit team bestaat echter uit een vreemd allegaartje van ex-vrouw tot gorilla, met allemaal hun eigen verborgen agenda. En dat soort agenda's zijn meestal niet al te verheffend...

Voor de score tekende Jerry Goldsmith. De orkestrale score valt uiteen in twee gedeelten. Het begint rustig en gedragen, met een fraai thema en mooie glijdende melodieën. Sommige van die eerste tracks zijn rustig, andere fraai vol orkestraal, waarbij vooral de track Deep Jungle positief opvalt. Hierin een fraaie underscore met een mooie Afrikaans aandoende zware percussie, waarbovenuit het mooie thema met hoorns wordt gebracht. Erg fraai.
Echter vanaf de track Hippo Attack wordt de muziek aanzienlijk minder prettig. Er sluipt dan een forse mate van dreiging en spanning de film en de score binnen, die de beluisterbaarheid flink doet kelderen. De track Crash Site begint nog fraai, maar als de crash daadwerkelijk dreigt, komen de Afrikaanse fluiten binnen en neemt de spanning toe met flinke percussieslagen.
De track Kathega begint met veel actie en dreiging om toch wel mooi orkestraal af te sluiten met pittige blazerklanken.

Zowel de openingstrack als de afsluitende track bevatten een soort Afrikaanse zang op een fraaie symfonische laag van orkestmuziek. De laatste track is daarin meer een soort suite waarin diverse klankkleuren de revue passeren. De eerste minuten van deze track zijn vrij rustig, met regelmatig een uithaal van trompet.
Daarna volg de song Spirit of Africa, waarna het orkest met fraaie hoornklanken inzet. Op tweederde volgt nogmaals de Afrikaanse song, die naar het einde toe echter iets gaat zeuren.

Kortom, Jerry Goldsmith heeft voor Congo een score gemaakt met twee gezichten. Het mooie gezicht met de eerste 4 tracks en de afsluitende track en het niet zo fraaie gezicht met de tussenliggende tracks. Al zitten ook daar nog wel enige fraaie klanken tussen, maar helaas overheerst daarin vooral dreiging, actie en spanning. Mijn waardering haalt daardoor slechts een krappe zeven.
