De film North by Northwest is een bekende thriller van Alfred Hitchcock. Het verhaal draait om advertentieverkoper Roger Thornhill (Cary Crant), die door een bende voor iemand anders wordt aangezien. Hij wordt daardoor verdacht een CIA agent te zijn en door hen ontvoerd, maar weet te ontsnappen. Hij moet nu op zoek naar die CIA agent om van de verdachtmaking af te komen en hij wordt daarbij geholpen door een mooie dame, terwijl ondertussen ook de overheid achter hem aan zit...
De score is geschreven door Bernard Herrmann, die er een fraaie symfonische score van gemaakt heeft. Vooral het thema van de film is redelijk bekend en komt ook in vele tracks terug, wat het geheel een mooi consistent karakter geeft. Vooral in de rustige tracks komt dit thema goed naar voren.
Verreweg de meeste tracks zijn voorzien van spannende muziek en aktiemuziek, waarbij echter de dissonanten goeddeels afwezig zijn. Dat maakt ook deze tracks behoorlijk beluisterbaar. De melodieën in die tracks, waarin ook af en toe het thema zit verwerkt, zijn echter veel minder vanwege die spanning, dan de rustige tracks, die er qua melodie behoorlijk bovenuit steken.
Ondanks dat deze score uit 1959 komt, is hij echter nauwelijks gedateerd en kan wedijveren met menige hedendaagse score. Dit is vooral een gevolg van de instrumentatie die vrij rustig gehouden is en nauwelijks schetterende blazers en jazzy arrangementen bevat, wat in veel 60er en 70er jaren scores gebruik was.
Kortom, voor een oudje als North by Northwest doet deze score van Bernard Herrmann behoorlijk modern aan. De volledig symfonische stijl en de afwezigheid van jazzy elementen doen de score zeker goed. Maar het blijft een score voor een thriller en bevat dus veel tracks met spanningsmuziek en aktie-elementen, die minder goed in het gehoor liggen, door minder fraaie melodielijnen die deze spanning suggereren. De orkestratie ervan maakt echter veel goed en de rustige tracks versterken dit door het fraaie hoofdthema van de film vooral in deze rustige tracks duidelijk uit te laten komen.

Joel McNeely and Robert Townson have recorded a new Bernard Herrmann album, and this time they’ve headed North by Northwest! for the most complete edition of this legendary score ever available.
One of the all-time classic film scores – a Herrmann/Hitchcock masterpiece – gets a brand new and revelatory recording! It’s amazing how many mysteries and secrets even some of the most famous film scores of all-time can still hold. Who would have thought that there could still be never-before-heard cues from North by Northwest? And we’re not talking about a 30-second fragments. The Highway, a cue that turns out to be the second longest cue of the whole score, receives its world premiere recording here. On The Rocks is heard in its entirely for the very first time, restoring all the edited material from the film and subsequent soundtrack. We’ve also restored extra bars all over the place … including Conversation Piece and Finale that have only been heard on the old Varèse Sarabande CD conducted by Laurie Johnson.
Finally complete, and at over 65:00 of Bernard Herrmann, Joel McNeely leads the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra in a recording milestone.
