Ondertussen is John Powell uitegroeid tot 1 van de beste componisten voor animatiefilms. Powell weet vaak voor genoeg variatie te zorgen waardoor je uren kan luisteren naar zijn betoverende muziek. Na veel animatiescores is het natuurlijk lastig om origineel te blijven, bij The Lorax had ik daarom ook zeker mijn twijfels toen ik de samples beluisterde. Gelukkig bleek de score helemaal niet tegen te vallen, integendeel! De score is fris, origineel en 100 % Powell!
Het begint al bij track 1, een mooie track zoals we van Powell gewend zijn. Het Lorax-Theme wordt hier nog niet bespeeld. Ik beschouw het hoofdthema als een thema op de piano die je pas in track 13 helemaal volledig hoort. Gelukkig horen we genoeg moois voor deze track. We horen zelfs in track 4 een aantal kleine stemmetjes, dit doet me denken aan de stemmen die hij ook gebruikte bij scores zoals Ice Age: The Meltdown en Happy Feet. Veel strijkers en af en toe ook lekker wat percussie zorgt voor een gevarieerde score met leuke melodieën. Natuurlijk is The Lorax een film met veel humor, dat hoor je erg veel terug in de muziek, de leuke vrolijke muziek zorgt bij een lach op mijn gezicht maar af en toe lijkt Powell iets teveel door te schieten hierin. Voor iemand anders die deze score beluisterd zou het af en toe wat te veel zijn, zo is Truffula Valley Fantasy een geweldige track maar valt hij erg tegen qua de andere tracks. Beluister daarom is een track zoals ‘The River Bed’, een geweldige track met veel strijkers, blaasinstrumenten en heerlijke percussie. Eén van de beste op deze score naar mijn mening. Het is mooi om te horen dat Powell zeker nog niet de kwaliteit is verloren die hij voorheen ook al had, zijn tracks blijven heerlijk om naar te luisteren en daarom is The Lorax ook zeker een score die je moet beluisteren als echte Powell liefhebber. Maar ook zonder fan te zijn van zijn muziek is The Lorax een leuke score om naar te luisteren omdat het genoeg afwisselen heeft en voldoende melodieën waardoor het niet een saaie score wordt.
Funeral for a Tree
Een prachige Powell track omdat ik Powell niet alleen sterk vind in zijn actie maar ook zeker in de rustige emotionele tracks. In Funeral for a Tree begint het meteen met een piano die de hoofdmelodie van de film speelt, dit houdt even stand tot ongeveer 1 minuut wat eigenlijk veels te kort is. Ik had wel meer willen horen van deze prachtige piano maar helaas stopt de piano rond de 1 minuut en maakt deze plaats voor een geheimzinnige melodie. Gelukkig komt de piano rond de 1:35 minuten weer terug, gevolgd door de strijkers, en horen we vanaf 1:57 minuten het hoofdthema van de film/score. Helaas is het hierna afgelopen maar beschouw ik ‘Funeral for a Tree’ als dé beste track van deze score omdat ik gewoon erg veel van Powell’s pianospel houd.
Een score met voldoende variatie en de heerlijke instrumenten die we van Powell gewend zijn. Van het melodieuze pianospel tot de snelle strijkers, de score zit erg goed in elkaar. The Lorax hoeft zeker niet het laatste animatieproject te zijn van Powell. Genoeg vrolijkheid, drama en actie zit er in deze score verstopt en maakt ’t allemaal weer een aangename score om naar te luisteren. De klasse van Ice Age: The Meltdown zat ‘m toch in de vele melodieën, iets wat deze score ook had, maar helaas spreekt The Lorax mij dan toch een stuk minder aan. Wellicht komt het door de tijdsduur maar wellicht ook door het aantal thema’s wat wel bij Ice Age aanwezig is. Ondanks al deze feiten geef ik deze score toch een verdiende 8.

Au cours des dernières années, John Powell a fait des films d'animation un véritable terrain de jeu. 'Ice Age: The Meltdown', 'Horton', 'Happy Feet', sans oublier 'Rio', 'Kung Fu Panda' et surtout 'How To Train Your Dragon', autant de succès qui ne font que confirmer que le compositeur est dans son élément.
Il revient à la charge avec 'The Lorax', film d'animation familial auquel les compositions colorées et vivantes de John Powell doivent aller comme un gant. Sur ces simples considérations, cette bande originale est une réussite évidente.
Cependant, à l'inverse de 'Rio', dans lequel on observait un certain manque d'originalité au niveau des thèmes, on observe ici peu de renouveau en matière de structure. Les principaux tics de John Powell sont ici plus présents que jamais. Ainsi, même si les thèmes développés pour 'The Lorax' sont extrêmement novateurs, on a une incessante impression de déjà-vu (ou plutôt, entendu) et on pense fréquemment à 'Kung Fu Panda' ou 'Ice Age: The Meltdown'.
Plusieurs pistes sortent évidemment de l'ordinaire: 'Truffula Valley Fantasy' et ses choeurs féminins pour le moins surprenants, 'The River Bed' et 'Houseguests' présentent un thème léger, romantique, tout simplement mignon, qui convient si bien au 'Lorax', et enfin 'Thneedville Chase', morceau d'action décapant qui progressivement en intensité, sur une batterie à la 'Uprising' (Muse).

Another Dr. Seuss movie was bound to happen and having John Powell write the score for this move was probably the best idea that came from this movie. Seemingly building on the successes of his past scores, Powell creates a score that much like the colors of the movie, paints a rather bright and colorful picture of this world of Dr. Seuss.
The problem for the bulk of this score is not that it's colorful or tuneful but like the narrative of the movie, the score becomes disjointed. With many wonderful themes playing in the score they have a tendency to come and go a little to quick for my taste. But the score isn't a waste, I like it but the greatest statement of the main themes are actually in the songs Thneedville and Let It Grow in the other soundtrack.
It works for the movie, that's all that can be asked of the composer. I just wish more time had gone into extending some of the themes less on the songs of the accompanied album.
