Fire on the Mountain - 06/10 - Przegląd wersji Tom Daish, zgłoszone w (Język angielski)
After the popular Amanda, Prometheus have presented us with two more slightly more obscure Basil Poledouris scores, although both date from the early 80's, before he became quite such a big name in film composing. The film of the title of the album is an IMAX movie about flying, but the album actually begins with Fire on the Mountain which, according to the liner notes, is a little known film. Well, quite.

I don't know if I have stereotyped Basil Poledouris too much, but whenever I come across something that doesn't sound like Starship Troopers or Robocop I'm surprised. I suppose it's the same kind of reaction that people have to Saving Private Ryan when they expect Star Wars - or something. Fire on the Mountain is perhaps closest in style to Poledouris' more recent Lonesome Dove, albeit on a much more intimate scale. The orchestra, or rather the ensemble is small and the tone gentle, not quite nostalgic, but certainly getting that way. There is also a folksy air; occasional guitar, quiet woodwinds and the odd string passage make for a delicate concoction that only really stirs up in the finale cue, Goodbye Ol' Horse. It's all rather lovely, but somewhat incidental with neither the drama nor the melodic gift to be fully engaging.

The one thing I've noticed about IMAX films is that they are almost always, how can I put this, erm, crap. Well, mediocre at best - a format that seems completely in love with its own technology rather than any serious effort to actually make decent films. If fiction, they are the kind of thing that might pass as a TV movie, but because of the format get theatrical release. The documentaries are almost always stupefyingly mediocre; the kind of thing the Discovery Channel would ditch as too pathetic for an audience with an IQ in double figures. There have been some pure spectacle films which seem to be where the format is at its best and these have wielded some fine scores, perhaps most notably John Barry's Across the Sea of Time. If any composer was born to write pure music of breathtaking views, it's John Barry.

Anyway, this particular IMAX film about fighter pilots doing unreasonably dangerous stunts probably looked quite splendid on the side screen format given the wide vistas flying high affords. Poledouris' score starts with a flute motif that recalls Goldsmith's classic The Blue Max and after some quieter material, launches into full scale brassy WWII movie type aerial combat, although Poledouris' occasionally jazzy rhythms help to perk up what could be a rather out of date format. The rather unexpected addition of a choir adds colour to the palette, even if it doesn't actually evolve into anything more.

I don't know whether I expect too much, or expect the wrong thing with Basil Poledouris, but much though both of these scores have their charms, I can't help thinking that if they were by anyone else, they'd have been totally forgotten. Flyers is likely to come away the more appreciated score, simply because it is so much more exciting than Fire on the Mountain, even though in truth it isn't actually any more memorable. The typically fawning liner notes are at least helpful in providing information on two films I suspect almost nobody has actually seen, which at least provides some context. I'm sure it'll be popular with Poledouris fans, but I can't help thinking there are plenty of better scores he's penned since that are easier to obtain.
