A Midsummer Night's Dream - 08/10 - Recensie van Andreas Lindahl, ingevoerd op (Engels)
Simon Boswell's score for A Midsummer Night's Dream is lush, romantic and vibrant, and is full of life, magic and enchantment. Lots of writing for strings, harps and flutes, and often very soft and relaxing and sometimes also very classical sounding. The only really disturbing parts are a couple of cues, like for instance "Hot Ice", with more folk music inspired music. Boswell uses all kinds of exotic flutes and other folk instruments, which gives the music a really exotic sound. The probably is just that it's no good. The sound is too raw and unpolished, some of the instruments are out of tune and the melody is annoying, but apart from that, Boswell's score is very good and a treat listening to, although it is only about 30 minutes long. Highlight is the first score track, "The course of true love", which has some emotional and sentimental music performed by strings and woodwinds. There is also some excellent playfull, clever sounding music in "What Fools These Mortals Be".

This soundtrack should also appeal to opera lovers, as it includes several opera classics, such as the wonderful "Brindisi", from Verdi's La Traviata, "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and the famous "Che gelida manina" from La Bohème, among others, performed by singers like Luciano Pavarotti, Cecilia Bartoli and Renée Fleming. Also included are the Overture, the Wedding March and Fair Lovers You are Fortunately Met, from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream - three wonderful pieces, as is the "Intermezzo" from Cavalleria Rusticana.

How much you will apppreciate this album probably depends on your opinion about opera. I like it, and the vocal pieces do not, surprisingly, detract from Boswell's score. All in all, an enjoyable soundtrack, and an enjoyable score, that completely took me by surprise, by Simon Boswell.
